... yup, cuz drivin' in that slushy sh!+ that comes with all the salt is "so much safer" than the snow itself.

No one is bustin' balls over the crew doing their jobs ........... it's that d@mn overuse of salt that is on topic.

We had problems here in northern pa with all that rot to on our cars, then we switched to Volvos............and cant figure it out, even our 1999 V70 with 300,000 thousand on it, doesnt have even a spec of rust on it. We now run 4 volvos in the family, NOT one has so much as a rust spot on it. Now, our 2007 GM vehicle, is just a poor excuse of a car. Rust all over it already. Same with the 04 GM we have. The only volvo that seems to rot out that we have found, is the little c40 wagons. They seem to be rust buckets. But, we are staying away from the "American" cars anymore. Put the daughter in a 98 Lexus a year ago, got it for 800 bucks, has 350,000 on it, and not once, have I gotten the dreaded phone call....."Dad, i am broke down...." Its truly a shame. Was die hard GM, then ran far and fast from them when the Obama decided he should own them. Glad we did, never been happier with a car since we went to volvo and lexus. Thank you GM for opening our minds!!

Very high quality paint and galvanized body panels my friend! Superior engineering, fit and finish as well. Audi has a 10 year warranty againts rust perforation on all vehicles. They dont get too many claims and when they do, the car is inspected head to toe only to figure out why it rusted and is then sent to the body shop for repair free of charge. Ford and Chevrolet would go under trying to uphold a promise of that stature. Although my 2002 Ranger is holding its own quite well with 212,XXX miles and counting. The bottoms of the doors are finally rusting but the tailgate is perfect.
My '95 Dakota had rusty front fenders and some rust on the frame but everywhere else on the truck looks brand new. That one lived in Illinois most of its life and sat parked in a parking lot along a very busy, highly salted road for about three years before I bought it. The cylinder heads were rusted right to the block yet the body survived.

I haven't seen a salt truck since I moved to Fargo 5 years ago. They put down some brown juice in front of some of the bigger intersections every once in a while ... one of my buddies said its beet juice, I don't know how true that is. I remember living in downtown Fargo 3 years and having a solid 2 inches of snow/ice built up on the roads all winter. This winter there are already some lesser used roads with about a half inch of ice built up on them. If it doesn't get above freezing they will leave it all year. Most people do fine, Idiots end up in the ditch. Like stated earlier, no amount of road care and safety equipment/regulations is going to help some idiots.

Our 95 dakota, with only 49,000 miles, has NO frame left under it. Tsk tsk. Such a decent runner too, 4wd works well in her... All I can use her for is around the house here  >:(

You are lucky in my opinion, I knew that ND didn't use salt in the past, I was wondering if they had started. A friend of mine has a brother living in Colorado, he has gotten some nice rust free vehicles from out there. From what I've been hearing, Colorado uses some salt ( or some type of corrosive deicing product) lately.

I seen it all from Zebart, Rusty Jones to Used oil undercoating and this here is the real deal http://www.fluid-film.com/  and No, I am not a dealer just, someone tired of listening to oil companies tell me to save my car and change oil every 3k only to watch them rust away with a good engine.....

Do you park the car inside a heated garage? That speeds up the process like MAD.

Well said, two thumbs up !
Last winter, I bought a 1995 Toyota Pickup that spent all but, one winter in Colorado, it has 235k and the whole underneath is virtually rust free.  Be hard to find a Toyota of that era from the rust belt that does not have serious rust issues.

My dodge has never seen a heated garage in its life.  :o  The worst spots for rust are where the foam sealant is between body panels, or where dirt gets held captive.  Not much you can do there.  :-[

I actually bought a case of Fluid Film last year after hearing all the good about it.  I applied it to two trucks before last winter, and by this winter it was 90% washed off.  I would say it lasted about twice as long as a good oil coating, but was a bit disappointed.  :-\   Only thing I've seen that really holds up is a mixture of mill grease, diesel, and cosmoline that is sprayed/brushed onto things.  Local guy does something similar, and I've been experimenting myself with different mixtures.  It's best to apply it to clean metal before the rust starts, and it makes an unholy mess whenever you have to work on something, but it works.  It stays tacky and will "bleed" back into areas that get scratched or wiped clean.

A buddy of mines wife had a great observation. Look at the cars in the ditch, smashed up at intersections during bad weather. They will be almost new cars almost every time. The people who have a beat up piece of crap because that is all they can afford tend to slow down and take care of what little they have.

Yep. Exactly. One year I saw them load about five new 30 grand + Jeeps, big wagons, on the rollbacks around here because "Hey I got a new Jeep and Jesus is my Co-Pilot!!!"   Nope, Laws of Physics means you flip over and almost die going around the I-86 big bend bipass around Corning. at 70 mph in a snowstorm Mister Wizard.....LOL.
I have one very special sled.

I have a different take on this.  As someone that drives a 1996 with 390,000 miles on it, (with a bit of rust twocheap).  We just slow down and drive sane as a natural course of habit.  That is why the car gets older.
