Avatar directory not writable????

so I tried changing my thanksgiving avatar back to my normal picture - 168x111 size

got the error message below

The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Now I can only change to no avatar  .......   Whats up ?

Yup - same as always - use the last option on the list
