Thank you johnniev57  for re posting the pictures of my sled. I did pick up all the steel parts from the powder coaters. All done in a satin black. Turned out real nice. Next I will be taking the pipes over to have them high heat coated in a satin black also.  Found a batch of NOS hood straps and a NOS correct brake master cylinder. Still looking for the hood strap hooks. The radiator had been hot tanked and all the cooling fins straightened. Looks great. Later this fall I will start the dissection process on the bulkhead and tunnel. This will be the fun part. The hood as re comended by Larry P  was purchased by Jerry Legatt  Arctic Restorations as a hand laid glass piece. Turned out well also. Will be working on the fitment of the hood to the chassis and off to my shop for paint. I have decided that after the hood decals have been applied I am going to clear over all. Have seen this done on a few sleds and look SWEET. Will try to get some pics up in the next week on the progress.

Well I am back on track again after a bit of time away from this project.  After rebuilding the clutches , skid frame and radiator I have the sled back on the welding bench and ready to start the disecting process to replace the damaged areas.

Thank you johnniev57 for your past help on posting some pics for me. I have not spent the time in getting a photo bucket account set up to post pics on this site , so I may need some help until I can get setup. I did pick up some 5056 aluminum sheeting and will start cutting out the bad panels and break  new pieces for their replacements.
I think that this is going to turn out well with a little work in my shop.

Hey kitscotyRXL  I have some before pics already posted on this topic. I will take some more  of before and after when I get started. I currently have a 1977 Arctic Cat 440 Z all tore apart and going through the same issues. Trying to get this sled done to put it back on the track this season . Then I will get back on the RXL. Will keep you posted.

When I restored Rocky, the rear of that tunnell was in very bad shape from the people who raced it after 1978. I took it to an auto body hot-rod specialist, and he was able to pound out 98% of the dents. It's no where near perfect, but absolutely no one notices those tiny wrinkles in the back now.

It took him a lot of hours of hard, hand labor to tap each dent and re-shape the metal.

Larry ! I will probably do the same for the rear of my tunnel. As for the bulkhead damage I will replace the damaged panels. Good thing I am a aluminum fabricator by trade and have the breaks to bend up all the panels needed.

Good point guys.  I have a buddy that is a bodyman for Boeing.  Talked to him over Christmas.  He laughed at the pictures I sent him of the repairs that were made on my sled.  I guess when you look at them the guys worked with what they had.  He mentioned that there is some neat stuff to work with today.  The only issue is that it will have to wait till  he has holidays in July and can make it home.  I guess Rome was not built in a day!  look forward to your pictures  Vic

I'm sure Larry wanted to keep everything as original as possible on his sled due to the rare history.

While it's true anything can be remade with today's technology .... it's still pretty neat to see one of "thee" original Midnight Blue Express sleds still almost totally intact.

I have to agree with GHenery. As for mine , it had spent its time on the MIRA circuit and even though it has some racing history behind it , some of the repairs and changes  that were made are a bit to crude for my taste and just wanted a clean RXL for my collection but not a polished show sled. This sled when done will have fuel put in it and ran but not raced at  some of our events here.
Will keep postings on my progress.

I am in Alaska and in the next three years will be relocating to the states. Then I will have this race sled and many others that I have  done . Plans are to do a road trip and visit many of the events with my collection of rare race sleds.

Well guys ! Got the old gal back down off the racks and on to the work bench. Plans are to get back on this sled and hopefully have it done in a few months. It has been setting way to long .  Done 3 other sleds while this has been patiently waiting and now it is time.
