I restored a  92 Jag Special a few years ago.   It was being parted out.    I asked if I could by the whole thing.      engine was junk the rod went through the case.  I put a whole new engine in.  The belly pan took a very very hard hit bent the bulk head I got that all back good.  The belly pan is part of the side brackets.   That is not a easy find.   I found one but they wanted more than what I had in the sled.   So I carefully cut the bad out.  Bought a sheet of plastic online and fab the thing in.  Used black rivets  most people I show them think its factory    I tell them no its one whole piece the underside.  Stronger than it was before.

I got like $500 maybe in the sled.   I have won a number of shows with it.   We also won a few races with it.    Raced at Waseca last year in a couple classes took home a 2nd    Also raced it in Junior class at Princeton which we won.    I have rode it on number of vintage rides myself also before we switched it to a race sled.   Really like to get the junior and 56hp fan class going for ice and grass.  Lots of those sleds out there for cheap.   The 440fan 56 hp  class is the new in thing this year at Eagle River I saw.    A couple of Jag z's and 95/96 Z440's running out there.

A little side note  the front a arms on a Jag special/Z are wider than a normal jag.   If you look at  Jag Special the skis are out farther past edge of the hood.      Cougar, Prowler, EXT, EXT special  have the wider stance.   37 to 39 think it was       You can still buy the low windshields   by sno stuff.     Now everything is getting sold out little harder to find.     Also the rubber boots   I bought all that brand new.        The nose cones on those sleds are like hens teeth to find new.     I wish someone would re pop them.   I got 2 92 550 EXT Specials I need nose cones.    Even if they where out of fiber glass.    I think there is a calling for those.  I know I need a couple.

I never noticed that.  Thanks for the tip!  The Special A-arms look to be about 1 inch longer than the standard Jag.  Are there any donor sleds I could could get the longer A-arms out of, other than needing to locate a wrecked Special?

Edit:  Been doing some research.  It looks like the later Prowlers and the Cougar built on the AWS/Jag-type chassis might be a source for the longer A-arms?  Their ski stance is 39", the same as the Jag Special.

I got the dual carb setup on the engine.  It looks just like OEM because.....  It is! ;D

I hope to get it in the sled tomorrow.  I'm using a Cougar throttle and choke cable to operate the carbs.

My goal is to have it running by Sunday night at the latest.  They're calling for a snow storm here Monday!

My graphics designer came up with a custom "Extra Special" logo mimicking the one used on the Jag, Prowler, and EXT Specials.  The pictures don't do it justice.  With the lighting in my shop I couldn't get a clear photo.  I think she did an incredible job with it!

My 2001 Panther 2 Up 440 has the duel carb. setup, carbs on it are 34's.

I got the track, suspension, and engine back in today.  The carbs were a little frustrating.  I ordered two 2.5 slides from Wahl brothers and they sent me one with a left side idle and one with a right side idle.  I needed two rights.  I have several 3.0 slides, so I put those in and set up everything else to the single carb setup for jetting.  The single carb Jag uses a 3.0 slide.  I'll start from there and see how it works.  If all goes well, maybe tomorrow I can fire it up.

    Skier76 - they're 34mm carbs.

That’ll have some more oomph vs the single vm34!

I often wonder why Cat went with single carbs on the 440/340 sleds in the AWS chassis. Seems that the Polaris and Doo fanners from those years all ran dual carbs.

  did AC bump up the horsepower when they put the duel carbs. on them or are the motors itself all about the same HP rating.   I understand the Z-440 were more HP. what just a plain old 440?

I always heard the dual carb 440 fans were 50 hp.  Never saw anything to document that though.

I'm taking .040" off the piston skirts and .010" off the heads for even more oomph.... ;)

The JAG EXTRA SPECIAL is done!  Or at least as done as it's going to get this winter.  It needs a few minor adjustments, but for the most part it runs pretty dang good!  I can't wait to get some snow, this thing is going to be a riot to ride!

Thats a sharp looking sled! Should work well with your motor mods. My old Cougar will hit 70mph on the speedo and its in a heavier chassis with 50hp. Now if I can just get ot to run right lol

Thanks Danno!  On my test track I have about 600 to 700 feet that I can run wide open, and the speedo got to 70 mph in that distance.  I'm happy with that considering it's a fresh rebuild and still needs some fine tuning.
