El Tigre 5000
« on: July 11, 2021, 07:12:30 pm »
I have a 1980 Arctic Cat El Tigre 5000 with the 500cc free air. Starts okay when engine is cold, once it warms up and I try to restart it, it rips the pull cord out of my hand like it's trying to run backwards?? I'm totally stumped. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Appears your CDI is failing.  Causing the spark to happen at the wrong time.  I've heard of it often happening.

Update: First a little background. I originally had no spark so I replaced the internal coil, turns out the no spark issue was the kill switch. When I got it going is when I started having the kick back problem. I put the original internal coil back in and now it runs like a top. There's something different about that internal coil even though it is supposed to be a direct replacement.??? Very strange! But it's fixed.

Great that you were able to fix it, great motors in these.  too bad there is no aftermarket replacement for the cdi units...

If you bought an aftermarket stator, I'm not surprised at your result.

Your aftermarket stator might work if you set the timing with a timing light.  It's kind of a PITA to do on these sleds, but it's the only way to be sure it's right.  It might have been triggering spark too soon, and that would make it kick back.
