1970 scorpion mark II
« on: September 06, 2020, 03:06:17 am »
i am starting to restore my 70 scorpion mark II, i wanted to start this in spring but with all the covid related stuff i was working 7 days a week since march but are now back to 5 days a week. this is my first snowmobile that i bought used in 1972 at the age of 14. i drove this sled 3 winters and sold it to my brother when i bought a still in the crate new left over 1974 295 eltigre. my brother drove it until 1979 when he traded it for a 90cc honda motorcycle. around 2010 i was invited to go look at some old sleds that a guy i worked with, father had in his barn. i was looking at a 1973 scorpion 400 r.v. they had for sale and i ended up buying and restoring when i spied a 70 a scorpion mark II across the barn and walked over to check it out. i told the father and son that i had one of these in the early 70's and as i was checking it out i opened the rear seat back and found a registration card with my brothers name on it. the father then said he traded a old honda motorcycle for the sled. i ended up buying the 73 400 r.v. and 70 markII for $250.00 each. i have left the 70 original and would start it up once a month, but because the track is junk i could not ride it. between the bad track and the in the chassis gas tank having some rust holes in it i decided to rebuild the sled so i can drive it.

here is the sled when i brought it back home.

the first thing i did was cut out the top of the bad fuel tank and repair the rust thru holes. i decided i was going to do a plastic tank conversion which means i have to fab up a steering support as the original was part of the fuel tank.

here is the fabricated steering support.

for the track conversion i will be using the bogie system and track from a 71 scorpion stinger. however for the rear axle i will be using one off a 72 scorpion stinger II as they are 3/4'' instead of the 5/8'' on the 71 stinger. the drive axle will be off a 71 stinger also but i replaced the brittle white drivers with a pair of n.o.s. arctic cat black drivers. i end milled all the rivets off the bogies so i could sandblast and paint them and also replace the bearings. i then sandblasted the bogie suspension parts, rear axle assembly and the n.o.s springs i have been buying up whenever i could find them.
next was to paint all the metal parts and dye the bogie rubber parts. i reassembled the bogies with new bearings and stainless 10/32 bolts.

here is the rusty suspension before.

    after blasting and during paint

    and the finished parts

i had the day to myself and wanted to get all the fab work done on the sled so i can disassemble it and start the body work so it was out to the shop at 7:00 a.m. and start working. the first thing was to fab up the ball and socket exhaust i will be using instead of the leaky flex pipe.

next was to make and install a battery tray as i will be using a ccw 290 e-start engine on the sled instead of the sachs single that it came with.

i needed to weld on some hooks for a gas tank strap as i converted it over to a plastic tank.

i next needed to and some support to the foot rests as these bend very easy.

one of the reasons i put the sled together as i am doing the fab work is so there are no surprises after everything is painted. had i not done this i would not have caught the ignition switch bracket hitting the motor. i cut it off and welded it on the other side.

Nice work Rick. It looks like you've made a lot of progress and it's nice to see something new happening on the resto page.

     :)

i spent most of the day using a hammer and dolly to get about 50 dents and crease's flattened out enough so i only had to put a light coat bondo on. i taped off and applied roll on truck bed liner in the tunnel and under the running boards. you have to tape off where you don't want the bedliner to go so nuts, bolt's , axles and bearing retainers will fit correctly. i applied 2 coats about a 1 hour apart and then removed all the tape. if you wait to long to remove the tape you will never get it off. after letting everything cure overnight i will apply 2 coats of primer and block sand them with 320 grit in preparation for the black base coat.

i had a few hours off free time today so i scrubbed the track down and applied 2 coats of sem vinyl gloss black dye to it. i have been doing the body work and block sanding for an hour every night after work for the last couple of weeks and now have the chassis ready for 3 coats of gloss black.

    track before.

    the track after

the tunnel with the final coat of primer block sanded down and ready for paint.
