71 Lynx 303
« on: December 30, 2019, 11:24:14 pm »
picked up this 71 Lynx 303 this fall. after all the mod porting ive done to 303's and hearing about Sachs engineers modding one to 40HP and entering it in a snocross in europe and then beating all the 340's  i thought it would be cool to find that exact same chassis and drop one of my ported wankels in it and make a sleeper lynx 303.
didnt take a lot of pics during the build but here is the finished product. has a 4th stage porting job with about 200% more port area, an HD carb on a custom manifold and a stock looking exhaust that is really just a big glass pack open all the way thru. used a ribbed cover duster wit the stock orange spring and 6 25g pucks. a new seat cover from Atwoods, a Kawasaki recoil and adapter from my friend Alan ( many thanks for an awesome product ) and a bunch of elbow grease. runs sweet and is fast.

Thanks Skier :) glad you like it.

here is a video of it, you can hear it revs higher and easier than a stock 303 for sure. had to mess with the carb a bit at one point in the video as it was 40 deg out and im still tuning the HD carb on it.
had my puma with the 5th stage of porting out today as well but its carb is off a bit. drooling fuel out the intake, bad check valve, but at full throttle that motor shifts out at 7k and just screams, got to get the carb right on that and make another video, now that sled I would like to take on a 340ss or 194R... where do I find HD check valves ??

Thnx for the video Motorman......that thing sounds sweet you got it dialed really good .....no bogging going on there......I just changed the check valve on my 340 sachs panther HD carb I had to steal one out of an old carb I had lying around.....I'd like to line my 1970 puma with a 340 hirth 194r up against ur lynx but I think we are alot of miles and an international border crossing apart.....maybe someday....Happy New Year !!!!

Thanks unobtanium it dose sound sweet and has good throttle response,  this lynx is a blast , shifts out at 6400~ . if i was closer it would be real fun to run against your 70 puma, aluminum bulkhead and a 194r and all...steep competition

It is definitely the most fun sled to ride so far for any of my vintage projects.

funny thing about the apex seals, they supposedly were the weak point in these engines but after taking apart over a dozen of these 303's and then building over 8 back up i have only found one that had apex seals under the sachs tolerance.
there is a misprint in the cat manual. the seals start at 6.0mm and sachs says they can wear down to 4.5mm so -1.5mm of wear. cat misprinted it as new seal spec of 0.236" +0 - 0.015"making the lower limit of 0.221 or 5.62mm.
looks like an old metric to standard conversion error to me. the side seals and springs have all been well in spec in every one ive worked on, a couple had bad damage from ingesting something and most show wear on the bare aluminum side plates but those are fixable.
