Plaisted Expedition Machine?
« on: November 06, 2019, 07:36:33 pm »
Could it be one of the Plaisted Expedition machines or just a sticker someone added later on?

    Hmmmmmmm.

Interesting.  Sticker looks quite old.  The Munson Marine sticker is certainly from that era.  ( I remember that place well, I was a kid near there in '68)

It makes no sense as to a connection between Munson and a minneapolis based expedition however.  Very hard to say unless it was a spare machine that really never went on the expedition and somehow ended up going south to Volo as just a used sled at Munson's ?

My vote is for someone added reproduction stickers.   I'm pretty sure the whereabouts of all remaining plaisted sleds are well known. One of them was Left Behind at the pole and is probably 80' deep in ice and snow.   The others are in collections I believe. Might be two remaining?   I have a set of the reproduction plaisted stickers that I plan to put on my 67 Oly. They are available.   If that hood is an original plaisted sled hood I would think there should be remnants of the gas tank mounts in front of the windshield.   And I'm pretty sure the 68 plaisted sleds had 67 front bumpers on them because they were much easier to grab.

Is it just me or does it look like it's been painted around that sticker. Something looks weird there.  :-\

Somebody added that sticker, they were re produced and I have seen a 69 Nordic with one.

Other than that, $400 is not a bad deal for a 68 with new drivers and a clean tank, nice patina on that one. Pull the rope and ride.
I scatter them from the midwest to south of the Mason Dixon

It is my understanding that there where some school presentations done and stickers where handed out.  I have seen these stickers on Ski Daddlers and Nordics and heard stories of practice / training sleds and press or support sleds.  While anything is possible I just don't know.  However,  I am sure there is a good story behind the one in the ad.

That sled is in way too good of condition to be an original Plaisted machine. I've seen one of the Plaisted sleds in person and they are completely toast from the tortured journey to the pole

For those that may be interested, as I mentioned back in 2019, the decals are available, and in all different sizes.  Look here if you want some.

I have no affiliation to this seller, but in the last few years I have ordered two sets of these in two different sizes.  I have yet to install any of them, LOL.  Too many other priorities.

Those stickers were available back in 68 and were attached to many sleds and things. I had a pair I put on my new 69 12/3 SS.  I do not remember if I got them from a local dealer at the time or whether I got them from the Navigator Jerry Pitzel?  Jerry was my geography teacher about that time at Orono High School.  He was my hero at that time. Well, he and Harmon Killebrew.
