73 EXT tag?? decode?
« on: November 11, 2015, 03:52:41 am »
So I have a el tigre chassis with 73 ext  parts on it and am wondering if the chassis tag is from the EXT or el tigre?
How do you red the tag to know if it is?  the tag has been removed or replace at some point not original rivets.

Thanks

The EXT chassis has verticle stamped reinforcements in tunnel

I know it's not an EXT tunnel I'm just wondering about the chassis tag being changed?

I have already built a 73 650 ext clone. Got the chassis for the parts to make mine more correct.

Well the two chassis' are totally different so you still have an El Tigre'. The '73 EXT is an all aluminum bulkhead & tunnel! EXT's tunnel's are thinner hence the vertical ribs. As to changing the tags,  anybody that knows vintage Cat's would spot that. I raced a '73 EXT back in 1976 and they didn't have tags just serial number stamped into the tunnel.

I stand corrected. I couldn't remember what ours had as I had cleaned the tunnel many times, just didn't remember.  :(  I was hoping you would chime in!

serial number would start with 3 for 73   -  that is all the information a serial number will yield not el tigre. ext, panther etc

If you have a model number somewhere on sled - the number for an ext would look like 0250-022,-024,or-026 based on the engine size

Some guys swapped over to the El-Tigre' tunnel and put it on the 1973 EXT when the original thin ribbed one bent. I have seen a couple 650's/440's swapped over like this. Big hp, and bad bumps and general racin and rubbin' led several to go with the thicker tigger rear. No shame in it. They were just trying to race another day. Actually makes sense since the aluminum bulkheads were recalled and you were supposed to use the 1973 El-Tigre steel head for safety if you raced into later years. Ski spreaders were hard on the aluminum axle and some barn yard bracing attempts went bad. So Cat recalled the bulkheads and pushed hard for guys to replace them for the 1974 season. Finding one all original is super nice these days but the ones I stumble across that are still aluminum tend to be 340's. 60hp didn't push too hard. 110hp+ out of a mod 650 B series could.
