I looked through all of the old snowmobile magazines I have and I did find a few pictures of hulings regular 440 but no definate picture of his 440X I saw a few that could have been but almost all the pictures were from the left side but the ones I thought were his 440X had no name on the hood and no hole in the tunnel but there was #3 on the side.

Yep, seems to be quite a vertical leap the guy is making too.  Must be a mini trampoline on the ground just out of the frame.

With a little help from Chuck P. and some newer tools, the tunell got completed today. At least the cleanup part - now comes the rivet-everything-back-in-place part.

Other then some dents that couldn't quite be pounded out, I think it looks about as good as it might of after it came off the track in 1978. I intentionally didn't overdo it - I stopped short of buffing it. I'll have pictures next post.

Thanks guys! I promise more pictures soon.. got all the rivets back in it tonight, and got one of the spindles all lubed up and stuck in place. Seems like small progress, but anything moving forward is good!


Found out  last night that air compressors require occasional maintenance. It was running then made a very, very loud noise as the pressure release valve popped open. Then of course it lost all it's pressure and started to run again.. was loud enough to make me jump. I pulled the plug on it...

Tonight I actually read all the warning stickers all over the thing, drained (first time in 3 years?) it - cleaned the air filter, checked the lines... plugged it back in and it seemed to work..but I only let it run about to about 100lbs, then shut off while I used it for a bit, plugged it back in.. so on, and so forth.

It got me through all the rivets, so I'm happy.
