Title: twin track:Shes done, some final pictures at the end of the thread.
Post by: Ramblinray on November 20, 2011, 04:11:24 pm
Some shots of the twin near completion, I put the pictures up large so you can see some detail. The pictures dont do the detail justice.

I love the detail and appreciate the hard work.
Beautiful work.
Its amazing that there are a few who penalize this high level of skill and workmanship by jumping on the "over-restored" soap box.  This is the type of restoration that impresses me - keep going!!!

I agree with TJ..This is my kind of resto. I love the detailed work and all the chrome and polished aluminum. Who doesn't like to look at that??  But on the other hand.....Original Race condition is awesome as well. I have both.
Nice work Ramblinray!!!  Looking forward to more photos.

Well, it's hard to imagine bashing something so painstakingly beautiful. This machine is pure eye candy and your work will be appreciated by virtually all that have ever even contemplated restoring any type of vintage machine. Photos are eagerly consumed by the eyes of vintage sledheads as quickly as you can post 'em, so please just keep them coming, Ramblinray. Excellent work, sir.

this is the work of Kurt Krumm, He is co-owner of Goodwin Preformance. He was the guy who wrenched for Gregg whe he was the 91 WC, as well as Jeff Goodwin and many more who have won the world. there are a handfull of people that know twin trackers, His name is right up there whith Mouse and Brad Hulings. I cant take credit for anything going on here.

I have the good fourtune of calling this guy one of my friends. This twin will shine but make no mistake not a single corner is being cut, Its being prepped as if Dale Loritz is gonna drive it. I t will be ready for any track.

twin track update, Lots want to know if this will race this year. Really not sure. Tons invested, My builder says it gets shown first as this is really his project. I think when you get a chance to see it you will like the craziness that is built into this thing. At first it was gonna be run in "exhibitions" Now that theres money involved i don't need it to find its way into a wall. Make no mistake this thing is being saved. It was junk, And the the parts that were supposed to be there when I bought it were not there.

I do most my own stuff, Than when it get to the exotic stuff I turn to the Miller boys to help, All my RVs have been done by me. But this is way beyond my skill so I have it in the hands of Kurt Krumm. He was the main twin builder for Goodwins, Fenhaus,Ave, I'm sure I'm missing some. But his is considered top of the heap on twins. Brad H, Mouse, and Kurt were the guys.

Here's an update with some carbon used on the pan for show.

Ramblin .......... a sled only looks like that "once" ......................................

After you run it, it looks like it's five years old already.  Gas / oil everywhere, belt dust, you name it ......... it will attract it like a hooker on main in Vegas.

I'd leave this one for show ..... and find another to race if that's what you want to do.  Just my .02 cents

Allen, I have no idea what to do for paint, I was thinking of traditional ski doo colors, Now I'm thinking if I can find a cool and decent mold we could do carbon.I have though about a rap too. I have no clue. Ideas???

I too like the thought of original colors. Really like the way TJ's carbon hoods look but the cost and labor of making a mold to make one would  be way too expensive. If there was a market for 10 that would be a different story.

Ok so I didnt sell it, I cant afford to I would never get my money out of it, Here are the pipes and the motor, some fittings for the coolant system being polished. Also some updates to the cooling system so it doesnt look like bill the plumber ran hoses all over this thing. Look at a stock Twin and the cooling system is a joke. Looks like a rubber hose factory threw up.

Looks like you forgot to polish the spark plugs... just kidding.

Good lord that is one gorgeous sled!

With all the polishing, plating and attention to detail... it's a good thing you have a deal with Toyota, because I'm imagining this will cost what a new truck would cost.... no doubt more.

A ford deal with a diesel! I saw your trailer post on the classifieds, figured with all your sleds you have that you'd own a bigger trailer.  But then I remembered Toyota doesn't make anything bigger than a half ton so any trailer bigger may be a handfull on the road.  But then again, when you're Ramblin Ray you probably just have your entourage haul your shtuff.

Well after all this time we decided to find new complete glass, A call to Jeff Stenerson and boom. Jeff put the glass on a truck that was heading to lake geneva for the water sno-cross,( Good luck to the snowcross guys racing in 80 degree temps. Theres snow but thier losing 2' a day. It's on a ski hill and they store snow in a hidden valley)  TJ picked it up today. thats how you get things done, Its the vintage network baby. I guess the sno-cross kids were wonering what the hell it was. Should fit the new glass this week, and have done in time for St.Germain.

Fit a bunch of stuff today, Took the coolant bottle off, Fit and removed the belt guard, and took the clutches apart for final polish, It fired up today on the 3rd pull. the Glass doesn't fit my standards but I guess this is the way they were, Saturday we put it all together than its off to the body shop for some glass work and fitment. Than the paint.

As that happens we are fabbing a 2' high rolling stand to help bring it to shows, The stand is all stainless and will be very minimal so it will be easy to see the detail of this beast. It will be on casters that will swap out for skis in the winter to get it to the ice.

The sled hopefully will be ready for the St Germain show, I will bring it but not enter it in the show cuz I really dont care what any one thinks of the build. Is it over done? Yes, Too much money spent? Yes do I care what anyone thinks? No!

The twin will make its debut on the Ice at the 50Th at ER, With 1991 WC Gregg Goodwin as the driver. after that it will be run only on special occasions. I have another twin I will start to build for me and most of you guys to beat on. This sled was built to show, and if your in River for the 50Th you will see it go.

Ray,
I'm 100% with you on your restoration level.  I think we share the drive to do the best we can - on every part and I see nothing wrong with that.  In fact, I applaud you for it.

Keep up the fantastic work and don't compromise your finished product.  You're the one who will be looking at it.  You're the one who will know if you cut corners -so make youself proud.  And if it's "over-restored", take it to a different show where they appreciate it.

Can't wait to see the paint and decals.  Also, please include a pic of your stand.  Once done, I may IM you with some questions as I'd like to build something like that for my RXL.

Working on the goofy clutch guard for this thing now. I think the secondary came out decent. The coolant bottle is a bit different than stock, I didn't want to put a temp gauge on the dash, So we put it on top of the bottle. You can see it clearly thru the hood. When and if this thing ever get seriously raced we will change it. Remember this is a race ready twin. Just happens to be a show sled. You will hear it fire in st Germain, and if I don't bring it to the show your welcome to come to my shop.

Laid the basic stripes out today, My painter will improve the lines just wanted to give him an idea of the paint. this will be all paint, decided today to use no decals so the logos and race numbers and stripes will all be air brushed than cleared. I have a friend thats a air brush artist and he will do the work, My body and paint guy will do the base coats, than he will come in. they are guessing 35(hours!) for the body and paint work. The sled is in the shop for the first phase of the paint, It most likely won't be done in time for St Germain. I thought I would post a view of the final polish of the clutches and custom made cover.

while this thing is in the body shop we pounded this little beauty out, This will be the stand it sits on for the shop, or the occasional show. The casters come off and will fit skis for the winter. these things are tough to move.

the stand was made so it is unobtrusive, and wont take away from the sled. we wont fit the ski and track pads till its done.

Thanks for posting Ray,
Simple enough.  I'd like to find / make something like this for my race sleds.  Those suckers are so low to the ground, I can't move them anywhere.  Ideally, it could remain on the stand as I put it in and out of my trailer (then bolt it to the floor so it doesn't launch into the other sleds).

exactly, for transport the skis will bolted to the stand where the carbide studs go thru the ski, the back will have a strap or some type of tie down.

as far as the stand there are eyelets for tie dows underneath. that way the stand is secure in the trailer.

the wheels are very high quality and lock as well.

Lots of work here, This was re-pop glass. It was intended for racing not for what I have going on. My body man has 12 hours into refabbing the glass, Improving it, smoothing out imperfections, making it line up better. and laying on an entire 1" on the mag side to cover the clutches. Than he added a 90 deg lip for fit purposes.

The hood section under where the windshield goes was not nice enough either so that was built up  and reworked. It gets paint this afternoon. after looking at the tunnel that was already painted we have decided to shoot that as well. This tunnel has been rebuilt due to the fact this was a raced chassis so trying to make worthy of the rest of the build is a task.

My next resto is an 82 offset. if I start posting picture that resemble an out of control build please fine me and slap me.

Thought I would show the Ski wells, I wanted to have a nice reveal and so we went w yellow. Its all ready for the air brush now, work will be done by a local artist whos had his stuff all over OCC, and the SEMA shows. It will be a boreing job for him as I dont want to get to crazy with it. just some light detail work, than stock type lettering and striping all set in clear.

Getting impatient. need to finish and start my 82.

This is nothing close to what this will look like, The guy is just laying up ideas, We cut and fit the windshiled yesterday. Lots of fun if you have nver done one on a twin. (the 24 is a decal just for fitting purposes it will all be paint)

windshied gets paint today, than the air art next, should be cleared by weeks end. the seemingly never ending project.

I hesitate to post as this is far from done, The general idea is there but there will be much more detail to the flames, especially the work on the side of the glass, You wont see muck of the orange.

Keep in mind that it needs to be re sanded, cleared and buffed many times.

(also the bottom is black, the yellow shown is just to fill in the Ramblin Rayce logo

Your initial post mentioned the resto got a little out of hand! That is an understatement for sure! That looks like hundreds of hours of hard labor, but the results are phenomenal. I have started on several race sleds to "clean up" and ended up with sleds that were almost too nice to risk on the track. It's just that projects, sometimes take on a character all their own and end up taking control of themselves,  :o and I think this is what happened to this twin track, to the benefit of all who have the privilege of looking at it. Congrats it's a piece of art that we would all love to own.

Rambler,

That sled turned out friggin sweet!  Love the paint and the burning theme.  Is that by chance the sled I hauled out for from NY?  If so, it looks much better than the last time I saw it.  ;)

God this thing is cool. My next project is a 66 Huskey that I will debut at the ER reunion next year. My plan is to restore and raffle off at the show. Too many race sleds there last year I want to bring it back to simple.
