Title: 72 starfire skis
Post by: TXFAN on May 02, 2021, 02:55:10 pm
a person on ebay has two sets of 72 starfire skis for sale.   They look to me from the pictures like regular TX skis.  Can someone enlighten me about the 72 skis?   I am building a 76 starfire clone strictly for my own enjoyment, and was wondering if these might be an option if they are indeed narrower than the standard ski.

Nothing special about the 72 Starfire skies. They were the same as all of the 71-73 skies except they were the chrome plated ones like the Colt SS and 73 TX and a couple of other models with chrome skies had.  The only models with different skies from 71 to 73 were the 72 Colt and the 73 Starfire.

If the chrome is nice they would be valuable.

i will have to disagree with you.....73 skis are large loop, 72 is small loop.

understood.  I recently sold my 2 original 76 starfires, one each a 250 and 340.    Would gladly pay for a set of nice original skis.   Will use Northstar 38" from Wahl Brothers in the interim.

Dirtman, you are correct.  I was going by the part number in the parts book.  I do remember that the 73 skies had a larger diameter loop.  Possibly Polaris never changed the part number for the 73 style ski, or Polaris did make a reprint version of the 71-73 parts books and maybe I looked up the part number in the reprint parts book.   I will have to check the original parts book version and see what they show for part numbers.  I was surprised to see a different part number for the 1972 Colt, anyone know what is different on that ski?

Didn't Colt S/S come with shocks
and on std Colts they were an add on kit?

I goog'd it and came up with a pic of the original brochure that showed like you're saying. Tried to save it but it came up "unsafe". I did snag a pic of two 72s together that shows both models with shocks.

standard colt didn't come with shocks but the SS did.  both models had the shock provision on the ski, spindle saddle did not on the standard.

Not to hijack the thread but as far as skis go whats up with the different looking skis I think they are called shovel skis, I have a pair not sure if they came off a 250 tx or another sled I picked up. Thanks

Dirtman,
Yes sir, rear ski tail wear was an issue on my 1976 TX 250 I purchased used in fall of 1978.  It had about 1200 miles on it.  Not sure if it was from road running or what.  I remember replacing the skis some time in 1979 with some Cat skis I got at Small Engine City in St.Paul (?).  I liked the Polaris skis handling better as the Cat skis were heavier steering.

yeah Randy it strange, but 80% of them i have had were completely shot... saved a few with some serious welding.
