Title: Rest In Peace "Squeeze Ball" Paul
Post by: Mario on December 21, 2015, 06:03:11 am
Just got the sad news tonight. Not sure if anyone else would post it here, but I will. It's not the handle he used to go by on here years back. It's the name I gave him when we first met. If memory serves me right, I first met him at Waconia. He would come over, and swap squeeze ball primers for spark plugs. Neither one of us had much money. Kind of hit it off, and became pretty good friends. He did a lot for the vintage community, and many different charities. Deep down, his heart was in the right place. I hope everyone remembers him for the good things he did. I know I will.

Rest in peace Paul. May you be at rest now.

 You will be missed. :'(

I'm glad it was you Don.

The man will be missed.
He was one of the first few guys I met in this silly hobby of ours and I wouldn't have met many of you if it weren't through him.

Hope even those who had a passing conflict with him can see the smiles that he put on so many peoples faces.

I was lucky enough to call him "brother from another mother"

Chad. I guess you could say I met you through him. A lot of people asked the day of these pictures. "Who is the dude in the chair"? First time that I remember meeting you.

I believe around this time, was the beginning of the end of the whole vintage family as we knew it.

Please, out of respect, keep the comments positive, or keep them to yourselves. He deserves that much.

I met Paul in 09 at Waconia.  I saw him every year since at Waconia, and sometimes Ben too.  We would talk on the phone about once a year and I ran the Rat rod contest on his site for a couple years.  He was always funny and extra nice to us.  It was never hard to find him at Waconia with that animal pelt hat of his.
He will be greatly missed.
God Bless,

Thanks for posting over here on Paul's passing, Don. I doubt I'd have as much involvement in this hobby it it weren't for him and he always treated me well. Condolences to his family and vast number of friends in the vintage community who will mourn the loss of a man, who like myself, sometimes struggled in life.

Thanks for posting this Don, Jesse text me lastnight about this. So very sad to hear. I cannot remember when I got to meet Paul, it was probably at Waconia many moons ago. I even had the "crap badge" not only on my jacket, but also on my TX because of Paul  8)

He was a one of kind guy for sure! Always good for a laugh, and just to BS with. He had even came to the Garage Get Together a couple times with B_Mod, as my shop is always open to anyone & everyone.

Always easy to spot him...he always wore the black shades, and the animal on his head everywhere I saw him!

Thoughts and prayers out to his family, and friends. I am very sorry to hear of him passing.

Godspeed CP   :'(

My son got to meet him at Princeton this year for the first time and them two were buds from the beginning.  CP gave him a vintage$ledders hat too. Ben even was there and they were giving each other a bad time too.

Ben, please know your father was well liked & respected by so many, and that we are here for you. My condolences to you & your family in this sorrowful time. He will always be in your heart.

Paul always will hold a special place in our family. He was there when we came out to LOS in 2008 and was beyond kind. There is still a picture floating around of he and my mom, my mom wearing his hat of course. We lost touch, regrettably, but he will always be a part of me.

Thanks Paul! It took along time for the "C" for crap to wear off the back of a junk boat I had. God Speed!

I am sad to hear the news about Paul from his oldest son Grady.  My thoughts and prayers to out to his family especially his son Ben.  Usually if you saw Paul, Ben wasn't far behind.

I first met Paul back in the late 90's when I was just getting into the hobby and we have been friends ever since.  He could fix anything even without an arsenal of tools.  He didn't need a torque wrench.  It was his right hand.  Paul was a people person.  He liked to kid and tease a lot.  So much in fact that it got him in trouble sometimes.  I never took any of his antics personally because I knew him.  He was just Paul.  I also knew that if I ever needed anything.  He would be there in a pinch.  No questions asked.

One time he was at my shop and my wife commented that he had lost a lot of weight.  Without hesitation, he said, "well when you look down in the shower and can't see  your p-nis, its time to lose some weight".  Just Paul, being Paul.

He was pretty darn smart too. Self taught mechanic.  Computer wiz.   I believe he won a national contest as a kid for reciting from the Bible.  And he was a hell of a heavyweight wrestler.  They say when the match started, Paul didn't sit and grapple the other guy, he would just charge like a wild bear and take the guy by surprise.  But all in all he was just a good guy who really loved hangin out with people and making friends.

Paul may God rest your soul forever in paradise.

The trademark Hat.

Post by: Jekyll on December 22, 2015, 04:00:52 am

Paul Shearer, 46, of Forman, ND, passed away in his home on December 20, 2015.

Paul Charles was born on May 22, 1969 at Aberdeen, South Dakota to Dale and Shirley (Hill) Shearer. He grew up and attended school in Oakes. After graduating from Oakes High School, Paul worked in a variety of different jobs throughout his life.

He married Nikki Zetocha and together they had a son, Grady. He later married Treena Ringdahl and they had three children, Bethany, Ben and Josh.

Paul was well liked and will be remembered for his great sense of humor. He loved antique snowmobiles and he was a “Steelers” fan.

He is survived by his children, Grady, Bethany, Ben and Josh; his father, Dale Shearer of Oakes; mother, Shirley Lee of Maple Grove, MN; two brothers, Dean (Linda) and James (Kelly) all of Fargo; and several nieces and nephews.

A time to greet the family will be held on Wednesday evening, December 23, 2015 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service starting at 7:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes.

I met Paul in Waconia back in 2008 then got to see him again at the first 2 Live on Skis events.  I found him to always be very social and cordial.  Seemed like he was always working on his sled or helping with someone else's machine.

Things sometimes happen in life and people go their separate ways.  With time, the differences invariably fade to distant memories but sadly at times the unfortunate distance remains.

While Paul was no longer a member of this site, it is my sincere hope that his family and friends are lifted up during this time of great sadness and grief by the thoughts and prayers of the ENTIRE vintage snowmobile community.

Myself, I will always remember Paul in a Carhart jacket with the signature hat.

Rest in peace Paul "Cruel Paul" Shearer...........God Speed!

Oldsled, many of those pictures took me back, and I remember seeing those pictures when they were first posted of him & Ben on the hunt. That old truck he always drove, I just loved that truck...it sure was cool to see him hauling old sleds in it, and with it. He drove it to LOS one year, sure was cool to see him pull up in that.

That same truck, I forget who helped him restore it, but he sure was proud of it. One time at the Douglas grass drags, him & many others were down here for that event, bonfires, grilling, BS'ing and 9 times out of 10 Paul had us laughing our asse$$ off so bad we were about crying!! Then came the night and a couple people offered him a place to sleep, and I also told him "you can sleep in the passenger side of my truck & recline back if you want to Paul" he said "oh heck no, I am going to tent it out in the back of the truck tonight"...and I said ok. Well that next morning Paul was about frozen in the back of his truck...it got really friggen cold that night!!!

I also forget who it was, but had him in their vehicle with the heater on high & he was just shivering....of course later that day after he thawed out he was making fun of himself for it, and once again we were all laughing.

You are right oldsled, sometimes him being himself did get himself in trouble, but at the same time if he could brighten someone's day by making fun of himself, he would do it.

I will never forget one of the phone calls he made to me. He called up and we BS'ed a while, and then he said "the main reason I am calling is because I would love to come to your garage get together, would that be ok if I were to join you guys" and I said right back at him "Paul, my home and garage is always open to anyone, and everyone at any time of the day, you are more the welcome to come here anytime you want".

Ben & Shearer Family:

CP was one of the reasons that we attend old snowmobile shows.  We can all fondly remember laughing and joking around with CP.  It was always a fun time.

I will always remember he and Ben together--- a true bond of mutual friendship, respect and admiration.

We members of the Antique Club mourn your loss.

Paul went way out of his way to get me to come to Braap in Wisconsin in 2012 after I had basically given up on any thought of a MN trip from the deep south where I live due to the lack of snow in MN that year.

He got 69MOD (Chad) whom I had never met to pick me up at the MPLS air port, and put me up for the night. Chad and I had never met, but it ended up that we had a lot in common and have kept in touch to this day.

The next day CP rolled up in his rig en route to Braap and I got a ride with him. Chad and his brother in law Johnny "Homelite" rolled along in Chad's rig.  I got CP to get along side them and I mooned my host....good sophomoric fun that set the tone for the weekend!

He and I would call or text insults occasionally, I just hope when his loved ones go through his phone and find that pic of me shirtless on a stripper pole they understand it was all in jest!

Rock on, oh King of Crap! You will be missed.

Sincerely- "Jethro"

And I got to ride the "rear engine panther" as well.  Very smooth! I can't, for some reason, post the direct link to the youtube video here, but if you search "rear engine panther" on Youtube, it will take you to the video.

I met Paul at Pequot Lakes a couple of years ago. He was very nice and welcoming. Ben was on the rear engine Panther, Cp told me to take it for a ride after the show. I was going to, but I never got around to it, there was just so much going on for my first time at Pequot.

RIP CP.

Here is a pic, probably off of this site, of him on a home built.

Some four or five years ago at Princeton a young man whom I did not know came and sat with me for about half an hour and we talked sleds. I was very impressed with his knowledge and enthusiasm. Later met his Dad for the first time. I was a little drunk. He walked over and gently turned my arm over, looking at the calluses  on my hand and just said something like, "Humm, a working man, you're O.K." I felt like I just got a get out of jail free card or something. I just thought, must be a great dad to have a son like Ben.  RIP Paul. Take care Ben.

Hey Ben,
If you are reading this.  If you ever want to tag along to Princeton or LOS, give me a shout.  I am sure we can make room and find you a sled at LOS.

However, you need to bring your own orange soda.  You'd break my bank!

First,I haven't been here in a while,so I hope everyone is doing well.

I first found out about Paul's passing Monday morning. I had sent a card to the big lug and his family and received a message on FB from his Mom about what had occurred. So,I was one of the very first in the vintage sled world to know. I am not ashamed to say that tears-lot of them-flowed.

Like a lot of you in mid-Michigan,I met CP at A-1 in '08 and spoke again in 2010 when a bunch of you cats came over. That was some serious fun;my bloody ribs STILL hurt from laughing.

Also, like Paul,I dealt with the bottle demon(amongst a few) years ago. I'm a former bartender;I ought to bloody know better. Maybe this will be that wake-up call to others fighting the good fight.

Darn it,Paul;your timing stinks. My Raiders were starting to get good again and I was looking forward to smack-talkin' to you about your Steelers vs. my Raiders. Like AFC Championship game smack.

I'm going to really miss ya,bud;darn,I'm going to truly appreciate the communication we DID have. Break some trail for us,please.  -Al

RIP CruelPaul. Chatted a few times and I always enjoyed his posts. Just read his write up and didn't realize he was born in Aberdeen, SD. So in the picture Justin posted here, I'm standing between two Aberdeen guys, my Dad and Paul. Small world. Thoughts go out to the Shearer family.

"Cruel" Paul was anything but.  He was such a nice guy and had a great sense of humor.  He welcomed me to this site and this hobby.  Had a big heart.  He was the one who gave me the quote I use on this site.  He wasn't sure if I would be offended when he wrote it.  I told him I thought it was hilarious.  That broke the ice, he knew I got the joke.

Man, you will be missed.  Somewhere in heaven he's riding the heck out of a Nuvik.  😉

I just discovered this today.

He must have passed away while I was out on some key in the Gulf of Mexico and wasnt in touch with any internet for a few months.

I cant hardly believe it.......I have been in a suspended funk all day trying to wrap my head around it.

I will compose my thoughts for a few days and make a post with content then.

For now,..........Godspeed CP, stay strong Ben, and realize your dad was one in a million........one of one ever to exist.  A very rare kinda guy.   One of the top 3 guys I ever met over my 40 years of sled experiences.        :-\

Every year, about this time, I think back to the first real cold snap and snow showers.  I remember the big trip to A-1 show with Paul, Addicted, Rampy, Toad, Pete, Jeff and a host of others.  That was a big ordeal for a long haired vintage sled hippy from rural NW Sconny !

I will never forget it.   Or CP for that matter !   I know its about 2 months till the 1 year anniversary of Paul's passing, but I wont have internet at that time, so Im gonna post up now while I can.

First pic is on a VERY lonely stretch of highway about at the border of Montana and Idaho.  Its north of a area called "Snowline" .  I was drivin a big loaded Uhaul to Idaho at the time.

As I looked around in awe at the amazing Montana skyline, I suddenly thought about Paul and all the vintage sled guys.  A few miles later I saw a truck parking area in the middle of nowhere.  I had a RIP duct tape sticker in the cab with me.......so.............

Well, here we are. A year ago today, Paul passed away.

I still think about him on a regular basis, especially when I run across something from my midwestern vintage haydays.

Its still kinda hard to believe he is gone.

I now live in a place with epic mountain sleddin, yet no vintage scene.  I think back to my years dealing with Paul, and realize he was a big part of what drove me to really get deeply involved in the vintage events .  He definately put fuel into the vintage fire in many different ways.

I doubt I will ever meet another guy like him.  I feel fortunate to have known the guy.  May his spirit ride on !    ;)

Kinda sad Zuk was the most recent comment in this thread now that he has passed away.

Yesterday was the 3 year anniversary of Cruelpaul's passing.

I spent the day out riding alone.  I thought about all the crazy and fun times I had with Paul.  I think about him all the time when I see old sleds.

He would have been 50 now.

Seems crazy thats all he would have been, considering how old some of us are now.   :-\

I still mis CP alot.  I find myself in whacky vintage sled dillema's and just pause and think back to the good old days of Paul at his best........

The term "FFF" comes to mind.   Another classic said loudly was  " JUST MAKE IT HAPPEN !!!!! "

I wish he could see who I have grown up to be.  I'm sure he would bust my balls about something.  Probably yell at me for putting an eBay carb on my vw.  Or driving his pickup a little too fast..  I wear his class ring everyday no matter if I'm in a trench laying sewer pipe or welding.  And I proudly wear the crap badge on my chest.  Thanks guys.

I think of him now and then as I run across stuff from the past, and every time I see a NoDak plate.  He really put the FUN into the hobby back then.
