Removing paint from plastic-ABS.
« on: May 22, 2013, 02:29:33 pm »
I just picked up a nice 600 Indy SE the owner loved pinstripe and lettering, on the side panels (belly pan) there are painted registration numbers, I know oven cleaner may remove, I'm also pretty sure there will be fade marks left by were the numbers are so I may end up painting...

What would you guys use?

I have used mostly oven cleaners as you have mentioned,  I have also used wd40 with some success. Patience and a buffer should help minimize the faded areas.

yes oven cleaner will work ,I've used it myself..you will end up painting the side panels. oven cleaner will remove all paint...don't know mush about 600 Indy SE  but if the belly pan is plastic you will need to sand and wash it with javex or bleach ..this trick helps the primer  stick to the plastic .this will make the plastic sticky so primer and paint sticks better and stay on .learned that on well working for PPD make hoods and skis for Ski doo,Cat ,Polaris,,etc...I've used this trick on any hoods and plastic parts..

I have had good luck with the Wizard product Black Renew.  Also, on my 1975 Merc Grille I have had alot of luck using a heat gun.  Ideally you just want to scald the outside later of the plastic renewing the color from underneath.  Takes practice to get good using the heat gun to not deform the part but works.

    Ray,

On my friend's 600 SE we used E-Z off oven cleaner with the Yellow top to remove painted reg numbers on the pan.

I know pictures can be deceiving, but looking at the ones of your sled, I doubt it spent much time in the sun.  I'd bet fade on that sled would be minimal.

    Hope that helps,
    Roger

Ramblin .... once you get the paint removed, I would think you could touch up that area and then "clear" over it ????

Should make the pan look like new.

Well I did the ez off today and I took some very fine steel will and loosed up the paint. Can't even tell the numbers were there, and  they were a two tone hand brushed on old school paint job. Sled is really nice I may show it in an unrestored class at Jefferson this fall.

The numbers were on the lower pan, Gone like yesterday. Not even a fade mark.

The windshield is on the way from Dennis Kirk, I'm hoping its the small one. the originally sent the wrong one for the new body style, I hope its the small one. I remember having one on my 89 650 and freezing. My handlebar warmers never worked on that beast.

    Ray,

This is the low Indy windshield that comes from Dennis Kirk.  Loved it!

    Later,
    Roger

I had one on my '87 as well ...... didn't do anything to keep you warm, but it sure looked good.  I called that sled .... "Rapid Transit" .....
