Wisconsin Snowmobile Training Course
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:44:07 pm »
I read that every snowmobiler (vintage or modern) who rides in Wisconsin needs to carry a card that says they passed a snowmobile safety course.  Anyone do this?  Do DNR guys really ask for such a card?

    From the regulations-
Any person who is at least 12 years old and who is born on or after January 1, 1985 is required to possess a valid
Snowmobile Safety Certificate in order to operate a snowmobile on public trails, lands or frozen waters.
You must carry the certificate while riding and you must display it to a law enforcement officer when requested.

I'm pretty sure it would be the discretion of the warden at the time.  I have seen young guys on atv's get
pulled over and they had to send to the warden a copy of their cards bu a certain date or they got a ticket.

Snowmobile safety is not a big deal   ???  Most of it is a reminder of what we should think is common sense yet forget when on the trail.  When an "OH SHOOT" moment happens, your mind goes blank and your trained skills should kick in. Without training, your left making poor decisions.

If your from out of state do you need a safety card-NO, unless your state also requires it.  If you are of age but should have the safety card and don't-YES you can get a citation (how many times do you think officers get told the truth??).

Good thing I was born in 82 so I don't need to carry one... wouldn't have known I had to.  ;D

I have such a card.... Somewhere.... but I make the age cutoff.  I thought once you had a driver's liscense it didn't matter anyway.  I guess I was mistaken.  Maybe I'll sit down and read the 2013 rules tonight as it appears I'm nowhere near up-to-date.

Stiffy let us know what you find out.  Both of my boys have taken the course and also have LOST their
original cards.  I copied them before they lost them  ;)

Well, I'm wrong.  I can't find it anywhere.  When I took my boater's safety course and when I checked rules after I bought my ATV I found that a driver's liscense was good enough.  I must have carried that over to snowmobiles in my head.  Either way, they will have a record of my attendence I'm sure, and I was born in '84 anyway.

Yes, they have a record of all your certificates. I know they can print new cards. You may even be able to do it on their website.  When doing patrol, agents don't always have access to computer records so it would be less of a headache to get one if your required to carry it.

I photo copied both sides of the card and tucked it in my atv and snowmobile tool kits. That way I always have it if asked.
