NO SPARK CCW KEC400
« on: September 29, 2012, 07:34:24 pm »
BOUGHT A RAIDER WITH A KEC 400 IN IT. IT'S BEEN SITTING 10+YEARS.
HAD NO SPARK AT ALL AT FIRST.CLEANED AND REGAPPED THE PIONTS AND NOW HAS GREAT SPARK ON ONE CLYINDER ONLY.
KINDA A NEWBIE TO SLED ENGINES,WHERE WOULD I START TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM?

Clean the points again. Use a business card soaked in brake clean. Don't file the points, just clean them. Make sure both spark plugs are new and verify you have good connections.

That's the way to start, as Stingerman said. I have had CCW points that refused to come to life, and had completely disassemble and clean before they worked. I would only recommend aftermarket points as the very last resort. Try to get the originals working first.

Just had the exact same problem on my KEC CCW engine.  I did all the same things as the guys are telling you, but still no spark on one side.  I just happened to have a new charge coil, so I put that in.  Walla! great spark both sides.  The charge coil had apparently dried out in the connections between the coils and the frame, and it just fell apart when I removed it.  If you can't get spark after doing all the suggested fixes, take the charge coil out and see if is still intact.

I would assume your engine is set up the same as mine, then the top coil will be the charge coil.  It will have two sets of windings stacked on top of each other.  It will have two wires that are soldered to each one of the condensers.  It is held in place with two philips head machine screws.  When I took mine out, it just fell apart in my hands.

Looks like you lucked out, because replacement parts can be tough to find.

I'm having the same problem with mine. I've had the flywheel off of it dozens of times chasing fire from one side to the other. Once you got yours firing on both sides, how long did it last?

Personally I think these electrical problems may be a death sentence for vintage sleds, many electrical components are just breaking down.I had problems first with a 440 CCW and now 399 JLO already this year, last year it was a 634 Hirth-440 Hirth and another 399 JLO.Still have another 440 and 2 more 340 CCW' s with no spark.hotdoo
