1990 Polaris 650 Clutch problems help
« on: January 01, 2011, 11:45:43 pm »
I have a 1990 indy 650...   I recently put a different clutch on it that was "supposed to be off a 650"   This clutch is to narrow at the shaft.  The stock belt 1 3/8 width rubs and kills the engine.  Is there an adjustment to widen between the sheaves?  It is a P-85 clutch.  Any ideas would be appreciated... thanks

yes you can adjust the width. you will have to completely disassemble the primary cutch and remove washer(s) from under the spider. Really simple if you have the right tools!

Specialty tools or just a good assortment of tools?   Can I run the clutch with no shims?   Bought this sled with PSI pipes. Will that effect my clutch set up needs?  Im not racing it, just blasting thru cornfields.  Thanks for the info...

yOU WILL NEED SPECIALTY TOOLS, I WOULD ONLY TAKE ENOUGH SHIMS/WASHERS OUT TO ALLOW GOOD FUNCTIONALTY.,  HOPEFULLY YOUR CLUTCHING SET UP WONT SUFFER. IF IT DOES THAT IS ANOTHER STORY! i SAY MAKE IT GOOD ENOUGH SO YOUR NOT  (*)(*)

what is the ride height of the drive belt on the rear clutch (how far does the belt stick out above the clutch)? if it is to high it can make the belt squeal on the front clutch. if you don't know that much about clutching i would try to find some hands on help (seen a clutch or two blow up!). plus clutching is a huge factor in how well the sled will perform, the finer the tuning the better your 650 will run.
