Out of state shows and trail rides
« on: January 19, 2024, 03:02:58 am »
I have often wondered what you guys are doing about trail passes and registrations for shows that have a trail ride? I am in Wisconsin and have thought about going to Michigan, and Minnesota shows but not sure what's required to do the trail rides. Wisconsin has the antique registration which does not require a trail pass.

My sleds would never win anything at a show and are all riders so I would only be going to check other sleds out and do a vintage ride...

So what's the requirement for out of state riders for a trail ride that is organized during a show?

Here in Michigan you would need to check with the people doing the event. They may get a permit from the DNR that covers everyone in the event. They always did so up in Big Bay and in Naubinway. Otherwise you would need to have current registration on your sled and buy a Michigan trail pass, or get the Michigan Historic registration, which non residents can buy, or just take your chances on getting caught. A lot of people just enjoy the ride and don't worry about it.
I have wanted to attend events in Wisconsin and they tell me I need a Wisconsin non resident trail pass and I am reluctant to buy it just for one day.

That's interesting that you would need an out of state trail pass for a vintage sled in Wisconsin. If a sled is 35 years or older, we automatically get an antique registration which needs to be renewed every three years. Any sleds with the antique registration in Wisconsin does not require a trail pass on the trails.

So, I wonder how that works for out of state registered sleds that are 35 years and older?

Our Historic Registration is for as long as you own the sled. Sled must be at least 26 years old, it  does not require the yearly trail pass and costs $50.
I was told I would need to buy a Wisconsin non resident trail pass to ride in Wisconsin. I've never heard anything in regards to the Historic registrations being reciprocal.

I believe that is just for current sleds, not vintage.
