MN did in 66 for sure. i own the 66 plate. "S" designated snowmobile.

The 65 plates on Langley's sled appear to be normal plates?

shortly after i believe MN went to the decals.

I know Maine used them, I think in the 80's they stopped.

Canadian plates:  We still have metal plates here in Manitoba. Orange ones for a trail pass and yellow ones for no trail pass.

I always thought Polaris made an arrangement with the State of Minnesota so the two Sledder's wouldn't have any issues about running them across the continent. As you can see there were turn signals, windshield wipers, and a set of headlights added, part of the arrangement.
They did get stopped in Montana, but the Governor let them pass through after a Photo session at the Capital.
Those two are the only sleds I've ever seen with a License Plate on.
The first registrations in Minnesota were a sticker with a set of numbers on each side.

I believe 1966 at least they used the metal plates? I have only ran across a couple of them. im sure once the stickers came out, they got discarded pretty quickly.

My Dad used a couple of Wyoming auto license plates to repair a hole in the tunnel of an old Scorpion around 1970.  Does that count?

The old license plate repair trick! Your post just tripped my memory back to when they were used for a lot of repairs on the farm. Patched up holes in the outbuildings to keep the critters out, machinery quick fixes, even made grain scoops out of them.
I have a Minnesota dealer and manufacture license plate.

I had to do a follow up, I sent the photo's to the Minnesota DNR and got this reply.

"Snowmobile registration was first required in Minnesota in September of 1967.
The license plates you sent appear to be standard vehicle plates from those years."

So that being said, those steel plates are not Minnesota Snowmobile Licence Plates.
I stand with the fact about Polaris arranging with the Minnesota DMV on the expedition sleds.

Back in 1967 in New York they gave you the same plate as for a motorcycle
