Skiroule fever
« on: November 30, 2016, 07:09:29 pm »
Hey guys,
I just visited with a lifelong friend that I haven't been around much in the last 40+ years.
We rode sleds together as kids, my family's Yamahas and their Skiroules.
He recently retired, and with this past snowfall...........he got the bug again!   He probably hasn't been on a sled in over 45 years.  So, I was trying to give him some insight on what sleds of today are like....with the little that I've been around them.
But in our conversation, we of course reminisced about our old sleds....and he couldn't believe that there were people that actually were into vintage!  I showed him a picture of my 74 sl338, and he told me it was priceless.
In our conversation after that, he said that he wouldn't mind finding his old sled from his childhood.  That would be an RTX 447 Skiroule to have around to tinker with.  He didn't think these even existed anymore!
I would like to be able to point him in the right direction when the time comes that he decides to pursue his childhood sled.  As for now, he is just buying something to enjoy in the snow.
What I think he will want, is a pretty dependable, complete...RTX 447.  One to just play on when he gets bored.  However, I wouldn't think that he'd rule out a complete sled that wasn't perfect.
Either way, if you could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.   What will he wanna spend?  I have not a clue.  So, nothing will be insulting!  (I love spending other people's money ;D)
Thanks,
Mark

    Wow, Mark!
That old girl is beautiful.  Just wow.
Didn't know you had any green machines!  And Derwood?  Thought he just bled black and purple!  Who knew?
That's awesome.  Give me a shout, Derwood!
    And, thanks, Mark.

so what are some of the more "collectable" or sought after skiroule's? I know about
the racer. am going to look at one tomorrow, have not seen pics or know what model
it is, and it will be just something to turn for someone that will really want it.

Any Skiroule from the '60s is pretty collectible. You don't see a lot of the '68s or '69s, and I've never seen a '67. '70 on up they seem to have made quite a few more, or the distribution network got better, not sure which. The mid-engine SS models with the sliderail are kind of scarce too. Nice examples from '73-'76 are getting harder to find without broken hoods.

Yamalav, shouldn't be too hard to find a '73 or '74 RTX 447. They were a pretty popular sled back then and I still see quite a few round. Again, finding one without a broken hood might be tough, but rider-quality stuff should be in the $200-$400 range? Too bad you aren't closer to me (lower Michigan) I know of a guy looking to unload a couple of running '73s for dirt cheap.

Good luck, and good job getting another one hooked!

You know how easy it is to get an old sledder back in the game!  Once in your blood,  it never leaves! 8)

    Mark,
I'm not just a Cat guy, I'm a Skiroule one also. We sold the things from 69-73 so I have seen a couple over the years and have a few besides. I know he is preferring a RTX but is there anything else he would be happy with, for the time being?

    yamalav,
I think I met you at Derwoods place a few years back. Being from Pleasantville, I'm sure your familiar with Grandview Road  past Plummer. That's where these were housed until they found new homes. I won't be back in the area until next summer but if your friend is still looking at that time I might be able to help you out with the request for a 447. - Dave

With any old sleds, good skiroules are getting hard to find, like stated before the 72-76 trail sleds are hard to find without the hoods broken up front. Some of the rare stuff would include the snopros (duh)lol  the 71-72 rtx racers only around 600 made- 100 with each engine class...., any of the bubble nose rtx's,  pretty much any non-boggie (slide rail)  bubble nose is hard to find. The early sleds 66-69 don't pop up often... Any skiroule RTW, especially the orange one. 75s don't pop up much. (Factory labor issues)  The 77 sprint prototype -only one is known to exist....Gpi also built a hand full of sleds witg the left over parts after Skiroule closed I think only 14 or so of those were made, these were liquid cooled -one was for sale recently........ But 73-74 and 76 sleds seem to be pretty plentiful, just gotta find one without the broken hood.

well I went to an auction this morning that this skiroule was in. I didn't think it
was anything that I would have had any luck with. it was in bad shape, needed a
track, had a homemade seat. also the entire hood seemed to be coated over with
body filler or fiberglass. I do know it was a '70 ( tag had 70 stamped in big numbers)
it had what I think was a sachs 297 it was hard to read the tag. here is a couple
pics I took. I'm thinking it was an s300
