Hus-Ski 444 track cleat dimensions
« on: March 17, 2016, 12:53:11 am »
I'm hoping to pick the brain of a Hus-Ski 444 owner. I'm in the beginning stages of collecting materials to build new tracks for mine. It appears to have been redone once before, so I just wanted to confirm the belt dimensions before I go ahead and order new.

They look like they're 5" wide, 3/8" thick, and 101" long. Does that sound right?

Also, it's normal 3 ply conveyor-type belt correct? I can't imagine needing anything crazier than that for such a low powered machine.

Finally, what dimensions should the wood track cleats be? Mine are too deteriorated to use as a pattern.

Thank you! -Marc.

    Sounds right on the width and thickness.. length is 101 1/4".  Cleats are 1 1/2" x 3/4" x 12"

Thanks! There are a couple guys out there that offer the belting and cleats too, but I'd really like to try and make this stuff myself. Dan, did you order and cut the belting for your sled too? The company I'm looking at sells belting in 3 ply. Hoping that's tough enough?

Also haven't found a good supplier for the lacers. The company I'm going through sells them, but they're more for an industrial application. Thinking about recycling the ones I have? Thanks again guys!

Get lacing for a round baler. Then just trim them to length.
Most round baler belts are 7" wide.

Track belting, like toilet paper, should never be one ply.  :o

I've made several sets of tracks for Hus-skis and one set for a Waywego. The 101-1/4" dimension that 65tomcat said would be the total length of the track counting the lacer (27 cleats at 3-3/4" center to center). You need to subtract the space that the lacer takes up, probably about 1/4", so your 101" length would be close. I always left the pieces of belting a little long and cut them to work with the lacers that I was using. In my opinion, you would be best to reuse the original lacers if you can. I've used the alligator lacers and they worked ok with the stock engines, but the one I have with a 13 hp Honda engine, kept tearing them out at each end of the lacer. I switched these tracks over to the original lacers but used machine screws and self locking nuts instead of rivets. Some people go with the original style rivet, but I wasn't worried about originality. The first set that I built, I used 3/8" belting because that's what I had. Since then, I've been using thinner belting, about 1/4". It seems to me that the thinner belting takes less power to turn and when you're dealing with 9.1 hp, you need all the help you can get.

I forgot in the last post, the belting I used is 3 ply, both the thick and thin stuff. Here are some pics of building tracks.

Not sure which direction I'm headed in at this point. Spent the day disassembling things and am not thrilled with my results. The further I dig into this sled the more rot and broken parts I find. It's probably just the frustration talking, but I'm wondering if this machine is better off as a parts sled.

    Highlights so far:

    *Two broken aluminum drive sprockets.
    *Broken recoil.
    *Rotted out muffler.
*Bad tracks, no seat, needs new sliders.
*Chassis is rotted out under the engine and needs that whole section, including the mounts, replaced.
*Seater toolbox is rotted out and some of the tubing on the lower half is as well.
*Needs new skis on the seater.
*Primary clutch has a broken inner sheave and for the life of me, no combination of heat and penetrating fluid will get the bolt loose.

Feeling a little defeated at the moment!

With the exception of the clutch problem, everything else is about normal. :-\  Well maybe the rust is a little worse than normal too. Here's some before and after pics of the first one that I restored.
