So I know with Merc outboards they did all sorts of things requiring special tools and goofy fasteners. Did they design it hard to work on to make sure most came back for dealer servicing??

In another thread I recently disclosed my misplaced love for the Mercury Hurricane sleds.  The last thing I need is to fall for her ugly, problematic older sister.

Race sled? Surprisingly when you sit in one it feels sporty,if you shortened front spindles, raised the front bogies up and put an engine in that had some power,it may surprise ya!hotdoo

lol, There are not people who want to hear snowmobile storys, they don't want to hear your life problems and why you offer $25. they don't want to waste time .  The do want to sell it but it goes through me  to decide if your merc worthy,
thye said the cowling is not cut on this one ,not 100 sure what they mean by that. they said something about removing the skis first . He just called and has the manual and card, said it says 68

Hot doo is correct about the sewer grate, usually that is what they mean by "Uncut", but another common modification was to cut away the belly pan by the ski spindles so it could be removed without taking the skis off.

We were going to drop a CCW or Kawasaki in one to make it more rideable, but the chaincase and secondary are too weak. The chaincase has a plastic cover, and there's a hose from the bottom of the engine to the chaincase, the hose drips excess 2 stroke oil on the chain for lube...  brilliant.

That's what Evinrude did in 65-69, and maybe later.  Mercury must have copied them.

Cheap is the way to go, the less you have in them, the more you can have!

I have a love for these old Mercury's and was blessed with acquiring one from the original owner who indeed did work at Mercury at the time of production of the 150E. He got this one when it was returned after the dealer did the introductions and test rides and etc. etc.

When I got it the hood was totally uncut along with no holes drilled in the cylinders either. None of the updates were done to it. The track was delaminating though from sitting in the same spot some 40 plus years. I was lucky enough to get a NOS track from Mill Road/Off Road.

The man I got it from, along with his two brothers used it for deer hunting. With the three of them on it and pulling a deer out of the woods, they kept tipping it over. It proved to be too much of a pain to keep upright so he brought it home and shoved it under his back shed and left it there....until I came along.

Another thing Mercury did on these as an update was cut the belly pan horizontally from the hood. A kit was fabricated from Mercury to install a 220 bumper assembly on these so a guy could take the hood off without the hassle of removing the ski's. If this procedure wasn't done to one of these it would also mean the hood was "uncut".

I have since sold my 150E to a gentleman who was a little more fond of these than I was. I have stuck with my 250E's. It's incredible what Mercury did from the 1968 150E to the 1970 250E. Two all together different snowmobiles. It's like the difference from the 1927 Ford Model T to the 1928 Ford Model A. Two all together different cars.

Thanks for posting those pics hotdoo.  It wasn't until I saw those that I realized I had never seen what one of those looked like with the hood off.
