John Deere Trailfire 440?
« on: October 23, 2015, 01:41:51 pm »
Here's the deal. I know where there are two 1980 John Deere Trailfire 440's just sitting. Looked at them yesterday, seem to be a there, minus the windshields. Of course they are out in the elements. I am a cat man, so I have no interest in them. But really cant stand to see vintage sleds just sitting going to nothing. I guess what I am getting at is, if I get enough response I will look at picking them up. I am sure there may be a few Deere people that may be interested in parts or the whole sled. They are located in Oldtown, Md. Thanks, Dave.

You may want to post this on JDsleds.com as well.  I too hate to see them go to waste.  I've got an '81 myself.  Thanks for trying to save them!

Cheap is the way to go, the less you have in them, the more you can have!

Check the condition of the track.  The 1980 Trailfire track also fits the DEERE DD sleds...so they are in demand.

I have a 79 Trailfire 340. So far I am still in the process of working on it, but it seems like a neat sled. Although I am used to the strong but slow OMC snowmobiles.
I would also post them in the JD classifieds. It would be a real shame to leave them sitting there going to rust.

    Dave,

I call Trailfire's "Deere's Panther" as they are a solid, durable and reliable machine properly maintained.  They give you about an order of magnitude less trouble than a Liquifire.

Thanks for posting here so they can find a good home.

I enjoyed a 1980 440 TrailFire for many years  and many miles of good trouble free riding. I guess I still own it, sort of. Gave it to my son many years ago for a vintage ride group and I think it went out to pasture somewhere, even though it was in running condition at the time and real decent shape.
Should of never let it out of my sight. It was the first sled I owned that I felt I could ride for miles alone and not worry about getting stranded.
I'm not sure where that came from.....

It's difficult to argue which Deere sled is the most reliable because everyone who owned one has an anecdotal experience with their particular model's dependability record. That said, the Trailfire would be among the most trouble free machines they ever produced.

Yes Sir, that is what they look like. Only not that nice. These things are sitting behind my old High School. The school closed I believe in 99 or 2000. A gentleman bought it, has a Restaurant in the Cafeteria and he also restores vehicles. Roots is south of me in Brunswick, Md. I will try and post a picture or two of them in a little while. Only 5 min. from the house. Thanks all for your replies and input. Dave.

Here you go, Sad but true!! Looks like at least one can go, but the other belongs to a different fella. He is going to ask him if he wants to get rid of it. I'm sure it won't be a problem for him to let go of it. Did pull the recoils, looks like one is free and the other stuck. Won't know till Thurs or Fri of this week about the other one I attached a few pic's. Dave.
