About 2yrs. ago I picked up a 1980 tx-c with a 79 tx 340 engine in it the nephews ran it around and had fun on it, now I'm looking to run it for grass drags.
I have already posted on here about a skid swap and got alot of good info for that.

I was wondering what mods should be considered for the engine ?
I am pretty good at building up the reed valve type 2 strokes, but have never gotten into piston ports. So I have no Idea about port work on these types, Is it worth doing port work on them? the engine, last I checked had 125 lb. compression in each cylinder, Is it worth it do do head mods for more compression? or Do I already have real good compression and don't mess with the heads? It also is Stock bore at this point.   Any mod suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks again...     :winner

Depending on far you want to go with the $, but for starters I would go with larger carbs and some "good" clutches. If you are going mod then pipes and some serious porting with the previous items.

I would go with 36 or 38  miks ( I have 38's on mine) and a Polaris open face P85 or 108 Comet primary. As for the secondary any Polaris will work fine just make sure it is in really good shape. 19/39 gears should work well too and don't forget some studs.

Nice...Ok so I have the clutches then. I have a P85 and secondary from my 91 Indy 500....   Ive also read about taper bored carbs from what Iv'e read a taper bored 38 mm carb will flow the same amount of fuel as a 44 mm stocker.    Not sure on the price on those, probably cheaper buying the stockers im sure.

You will need to have that clutch bore deepened to work on your long crank

How bout different cylinders?  Will tx 440 cylinders bolt up to the 340 bottom end?    Also where can I pick up the intake boots for the 38 mm carbs for the 340 cylinders? :winner

the 340's and 440's had different stroke and the base is larger on the 440 too so they won't bolt up.... as for the carb boots I've had 38's on my 340 with stock boots, I used txl carbs and had to back the boot clamp almost all the way off then put a light layer of grease and slip the carb into place, you might have to put a longer screw in the clamp though, can't remember if I had to or not.

Ok vin, thanks for the info...I know you can stretch the boots, I was just worried about cracking problems down the road because they are stretched sooo far... 'yowza

Let me know how you make out. I just got a set od 38's from 711 on Sledfreaks and was wondering the same thing about the boots. I was thinking along the line as Vinfreeair's reaply but then was worring about the cracking possabality also.

Any imfo on the boot issue would be a big help if changing them is the right way to go.
