1968 Ski Doo Super Olympique 370
« on: May 29, 2017, 02:37:57 am »
The 68 Olympic has always been my favorite sled. I know the bumpers are not as good as the 67's, but they are sexier. The skis are stupid also with their tiny sharp grab handles, but skis can be swapped or modified. I like the fibreglass backrest, the pointy nose, the small round headlight.
Anyways, this sled was sitting behind a local restaurant for almost 20 years. My plan is to restore into a nice rider. I don't know about the engine though. It's probably full of water. It's stuck good. On the plus side, it looks complete minus the carb cover which I have in the shed. Also the seat obviously, and the recoil. I have a good rear bumper also.
I am going back to pick up a mid 70's Olympic next weekend for parts from the same place. Possibly an old Cheetah too, if the guy's son will sell it. It's pretty crappy looking but solid and the engine rolls over like silk. It's a twin, not sure on the size. I know nothing of Cats, but it's cool looking.

Edit - I looked at some Cheetah pics and it looks to be a 76. Also, I remember it said Spirit on the engine.

Although I do like the 370 engine, I don't have any experience with them and I'm pretty sure this one is junk. I want this sled to be a kick ass rider so an engine transplant will be in the works. I am driving home to Newfoundland next spring and will be bringing my Elan back with me. I want to use the 377 from the Elan in this Olympique and reinstall the original engine back into the Elan. "Super 377" has a nice ring to it.
Whatever happens, I will start on the sled and worry about the engine later.

I just realized I put this in the Restoration section. I think it would be more suited to the Customs section. Is there any way it could be moved? Sorry for any inconvenience.

Nice score on the 68. I had a friend who rode a Ski Doo 12/3 to death when we were kids and I always remember that sled and him as well.

The opposed engine is a pretty rare sled I believe. I would at least try to open it up and see what condition it is in before making a solid plan to replace it.

I also put a sled into the restoration column, when I had planned on a restore, then for some reason I got side tracked and it became a custom. I asked the question a couple times about moving it, but never got a response so I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks chris. Yeah, I thought these were kinda rare. I will definitely check the engine first. I would love to restore the whole sled to original but it's in pretty bad shape. I have seen worse restored though. How rare are these sleds? I've never seen one before. Just read about them. When I drove by this one for the thousandth time last week, I slowed down to see if it had an engine in it and that's when I noticed the 370.

Wow! Thanks kube1. That's very generous. I'll think hard on that. I have a couple of ok bumpers but a trunk would be great. I love how the '68 trunks are fibreglass and can be repaired.

I took a few more pictures today. The bogeys look great! None are bent, bearings are good. Tires are not even cracked up. Drivers look fine and are not brittle.

Nice big dents in the fuel tank. But the tunnel is nice and solid.

Holy shrinkage Batman! Track is done.

Looking into the carb revealed something interesting. How did that happen?

       Now the worst of it.

I think this should be attached to the fuel tank?

And now a shot looking in through the front air vent. Hmmm, it doesn't look good. I'm not afraid of a little cutting and welding, but this should offer me a challenge. And I was wondering why the steering felt strange.

On a positive note. The exhaust looks awesome!

Yeah. The fuel tank are areal hurdle with these things.  I got lucky and my neighbour had a whole chassis he was chucking out with a good tank! I drove 1 year with the trunk and took it off. I hated it. Flimsy and was bound to get smashed. Better to go to someone that needs it

Nice ride you have there kube1. I love the rack. I would like to put something like that on my '69.

I have another '68 that came with my '69 as a parts sled. It's got a really nice chassis but I want to use it for another project. At least I will have easy access for pounding out the dents in the tank.

A note about the trunks, the '68's were the only year with a fibreglass trunk that was the same construction as the hood. In '69 they changed to plastic.

Right now, one of the coolest things about this sled is the funky red headlight. I sure hope it works.

Haha! Yeah I wanted to be able to pack some extra fuel with me and I had the ol indy rack in the boneyard. Im not a doo guy so I didn't jknow about the glass/plastic trunk thing. I assumed they were all plastic. Anyhow. Its here if you want it. If it was me I would rebuild the opposed. Cool engine and you don't see them very often.  Good luck!
