T1D 440 Mikuni conversion
« on: April 21, 2017, 08:17:07 pm »
To make a short story long, I bought 2 Cats out of a barn in Keene, NH @ 3 years ago that had sat there since 1985 or so. I decided to give them to my nieces for Christmas, so was in a bit of a rush to get both done. 1 was a 292 Lynx, got that ripping easily. 1 was a 1975 340 Cheetah with a stuck motor. I had a spare T1A points motor on the shelf, so I stuck that in, & has run like that now for 2 seasons, no issues. I just finished up the original T1D, but made it into a 440 in the process, as I had the pistons/cylinders on the shelf. The spare motor had a Mikuni on it, but the jetting won't be right for a 440. I have several 32/34/36 Mikuni's available, & slides, needle jets, etc. Has anyone done this conversion, & if so, can you give me the complete jetting specs? I have the original Walbro WF8 that was used on both the 340 & 440, but would much rather run a Mikuni.

What size is the mikuni you have from the spare motor? Came off a 340?    Why dont you think the jetting will work?  You might just need a slightly bigger main jet.  Look at 125 and 250 two stroke bikes. They came with same size carb often and near identical jets.
Thats how carbs work. You put it on a bigger engine all the jets flow more fuel.  Just try it out and tune from there.

Yea, that's a good point. The carb on the now spare motor is off a SkiDoo I think, as it has no choke. Had to use the bottle to get this sled running!! I do have the same size w/choke on the shelf, so want to use a different carb.  I'll investigate the slide/needle jets, etc, & start at the same point. Can't tune it properly now because of the temps, but can get close before I put it away for the summer. Swapping the motors was my "rained out at work today" project.
