THANKS EVERYONE! I'm psyched that you all enjoyed the journey as much as I did! Can't thank you all an the ton of people that helped enough!

Yes this took an enormous amount of time. It also took more money than I would have ever dreamed. I'm not sure all the parts could be found again... but I would be psyched beyond all belief to help get the other two machines back in order.  I really hope they are preserved for generations to come!

Now the cat's really out of the bag with the photo below. I am 95% certain that the bulkhead and motor below are Steve Thorsen's 440X machine. The sled in Sledaholic's avator is.. drum roll please... Jerry Bunke's 440X machine.

Here's how I see it: Just 6 mag bulkhead sleds were made. 3 for 440X and 3 special, lighter machines for Eagle River.
Jerry Bunke's Eagle River machine is in the Snowmobile Hall of Fame.
Jerry's 440X machine is in Sledaholic's avatar.
Thorsen's Eagle River machine is Rob McMillians that I've shown on the site many times
Thorsen's 440X is the bulkhead pictured below.
Hulings 440X is my Rocky the Flying Squirrel sled
Hulings Eagle River sled was destroyed at Eagle River.

Jeff and Tim Please by all means let me know what I can do to help. I kind of feel like I need another project right now.  'yowza

OK Larry, now that you know how it's all done, I'll drop mine off ,pick up Rocky and you can start the whole painstaking process all over again!! LOL

Me first. Good job Larry. I don't know where you find the time and parts to complete a sled like that.

Hey Larry,

The first post was on: October 30, 2006, 10:50:48 PM. You finally finished 3 years later... almost to the day. Looks stunning.

Trade you. If I can ride your 340 at Beausejour (just ride it, not race it!) then you can take Rocky for a spin.  thmbs/

Inspirational!!!  Super sled and the story behind it, awesome!

I feel snowmobile manufacturers have to do a better job of honoring their past achievements
as you have done with Rocky.

Bullwinkle has seen it but has Brad?  Rocky meets Rocky...

Hoping to show it to Mr. Hulings this weekend! Brad's a pretty humble guy, so hopefully he won't be too bashful about it.

I'm with tigerpaw! The manufacturer's today seem to be too focused on pushing their latest achievment on us and have no time for the classics. This attitude extends to the dealers as well for some reason which is even harder to understand as they all started out as riders and enthusiasts like us. With a few exceptions this is also the case with the auto makers and motorcycle manufacturers.

This RXL is one of the sexiest pieces of equipment I have ever seen! The stance and proportions and well as the lines along the hood and the graphics are pure motor art!

Looking at my new sled doesn't generate the same response as this thirty year old racer. They really knew how to do it!

Congratulations!
