i took some new photos of a sled that i built a few years ago, including some under the hood photos. it started life as a 1988 400 indy. it has an extra 10 skid. fox shocks all the way around, 545 slp rz motor and pipes, flat slide carbs, 1980 tx-l indy graphics. kind of a old and new come together type of sled.

enjoy

The 2 545's I was around had a head support from the head down to the motor plate. some threaded rod and a plate over the head .

i would like to see how they did that, the crank case studs are only an inch and a quarter long. so i don't understand how they could do what you are saying. plus the head is already a mono head, so i don't see any advantage to plating it. i do know that on the 3 cylinders they did the things that you are talking about. on the 3 cylinders the crank case studs come up to the head (so they over size them) and being that the cylinders and heads are all separate they would plate them together. not saying that you are wrong i would just like to see it, and why they would do it.

It wasn't a full head plate like you mention on the trips. It was only the center third of the head. I don't remember if it had a hole cut around the coolant cap inlet, or if that was removed from the head like on the later 500's. These guys also had several RZ trips, so maybe they found something, or were just playing it safe. I don't know if it was their idea or SLP's. For some reason I seem to think it was a SLP update.

i had heard that some of the early castings from slp were a little lite around the base ears and some of them were cracking. then they changed the casting to fix this problem. it makes it hard to get the base nuts on and tight(have to grind the back of the box end wrench off). maybe that was a safety measure to help with that problem? i would still like to see how they put that plate on. i don't see anything about that in the manual that i got from slp, but who knows. the two biggest updates that i got was the moving of the fuel pump to get it up higher than the carbs. and moving the cdi box off the motor and on to the air box.

this shows the fuel pump update from slp. it is a good idea for all fugi motors of this era it takes a little pressure off the needle and seats. i do it to all of the ones i put together now.
