The fundamental problem with "what it's worth" is that anything that's not retail (real estate, cars, antiques, snowmobiles, baseball cards, whatever) is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it at that time. When looking for opinions people get, for the most part, what it's worth to the opinionee at that time. A 40 acre parcel of wooded land on a river was sold for $12 in 1910 because that's what it was worth on that day. The same chunk might have sold for $120,000 10 years ago, and furthermore, might only bring $60,000 now. Same chunk of land, but it's only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it when it is for sale.

Maybe the question "what it's worth" should be replaced with "how much $$$ can i expect to get for it" or "how much should is too much to spend on it"

A mint '74 T-Jet might only be worth $2000 to one person who just collects snowmobiles casually, but someone else who raced a '74 T-jet when it was new might be willing to shell out $5000 for it.

Really there probably isn't a way to make it work. People will always look for opinions on prices from their peers, and some of their peers will tell them honestly what they think (even though sometimes they shouldn't).

I like a combination of ideas here; start a new forum for what it's worth arguments and lock it until there are pictures and descriptions. As long as people know that there will be a very broad spectrum of answers, few feelings should be hurt. The people with the questions have to realize that it's not a retail setting, and some things will vary wildly. A lowball number is not necessarily someone thinking that they have a bunch of crap, but one man's opinion of the value of the item to him at that time.

Sorry, I got a little more long winded than I had intended.
