For the 72 season I was lucky enough to get Coltom's Winnipeg Sled to race for the duration of the year. She was a screamer and won the States Dominion 340 Mod class in Thief River Falls watched by  Bill Ness. 31 entrees in that class including Rich Porter and Dave Thompson which did not hurt my racing career. Any way when I started it to load it up to bring back to Arctic she engaged at 6000 rpm and just when she was engaging the motor disintegrated. clutch and half the crank went threw belly pan both jugs and heads went threw the hood. Now if that don't make your heart stop nothing will. was hoping Arctic would let me make payments on it as I was a newly wed with absolutly no money. Any way I brought it to salvage as that is were we turned our race sleds back to after the racing season and lucky for me I had a very good buddy that worked in salvage that I had done some favors for and he said don't worry about it and he took care of it for me. Caused by casual oil mixture "on the fly".
The 2 in the middle = Too much oil. I didn't cook the other 2.

I have not burned one down since I switched to Klotz, and became religious about the correct oil ratio. 40:1 for me.

Caused by going up a long steep hill with too little fuel in the tank and a stubborn driver (that would be me) that did not stop when it started running like crap.
I had about 5-6 liters of fuel in the tank (original Elan tank), plenty for going round half the country - if only the surface was flat. When going uphill, apparently not enough.

The result, 2 useless pistons, somewhat damaged mag side cylinder (altho usable after a hone), and 2 destroyed crank bearings because of piston remains going into them while running.

A freind of mine work at a small store and gas station The guy who owned the store rode new 69 320 Skidoo. He saw the his Shell book that they had marine gas ( He was thinking outboard) you could buy in 45 gal drum was to be a better grade of fuel. He bought one to use in his new Skidoo. For an 18 horse it would just fly on the marine gas after about two tanks  the olde 18 stopped died siezed tighter than a bulls butt at fly time. Melted the piston right into the cylinder. Hmmm not enough oil.. So the next day he called Shell to see what the Marine mix was.  Got a died silence on the other end an was told there was no oil in marine gas it was meant for four stroke inboards.

I think it was 1980 or so,I bought a Yamaha SR-643 1973,nice shape for an old Soo I-500 sled,Got it late in the year, had a race in Trout lake, thought this was my big chance to race the old yammie, put in can of Klotz oil and nitro mix or some thing like that?Raced and got beat beat bad,did my usual summer storage, shut it off and walk away, come fall nice skim of ice on Cedarville Bay,time to fire up the old yamaha,no one told me Klotz was not for storage,First I smoked the one side, than another run up the ice and I got change both sides and drained gas tank,So since I was so smart I sold the thing W/ 2 parts sleds for $200.00 and thought I got the better part of the deal till I found this site, wow should have kept the old thing--GEO

Probably one of Bickhams old sleds maybe????......Actually I think Jack was running polaris stuff back in the early 70s??

When the Nitrous hit of 150 horsepower [at 900 lb pressure] solenoid and the fuel  solenoid  [at 6 lb pressure] opened at the same time guess what gas got to the cylinders first?

The dreaded devils breath is neat to see but expensive to fix. eek'
