I don't want to sound like I'm talking down the volunteers in the good clubs who do the work to keep the trails decent (thanks), it just seems like every time you turn around you are hearing about the state association doing something that seems like it hurts rather than helps the sport.

  Buffalokat,

I want to let you know that, even being out of state, I respect and appreciate your efforts. :) Good luck! It looks like you will need it. The NYSSA folks in New York sound even worse than their counterparts here in Michigan. Like there, the powers that be in my state are afraid somebody might get a free lunch, if you know what i mean. "Pay to play" is the slogan chanted by the MSA. While I agree that there would be few trails without the fees paid by snowmobilers and club members do the vast majority of the work on a volunteer basis, I feel there is a need to give a price break for vintage sleds.

I had two properly permitted late model sleds, belonged to a club for years, the state association just as long, and did extensive trail work. At an end of year banquit where several clubs responsible for our trail system were joined by a number of state association officials and some MI Resources Dept. law enforcement officers, they had a question and answer session. I brought up the idea of updating the pre-1968 antique sled allowance, not changed in 20 years, to include some more recently built vintage sleds. The reactions from the several guys running the forum was somewhere between disbelief of my nerve and resentment for me as a human being for bringing it up. That was about 5 years ago. I hadn't even earned the right to ask.

There was a more recent softening by the MSA officials on the old sleds. They even had provisions for them, and a few other reasonable exclusions, tied to a huge fee hike last year. Once the bills were in Legislature, only the fee hikes made the cut to become law....of coarse. You just can't win.

We have no mandate for club membership here. Personally, I am not against it. Far too few people here do there part. To that degree, I agree with the prevailing attitude the state snowmobile association officials have. But money wise, you will lose a quantity of your trail users every time you jack fees. At some point, the numbers will fall in both trail riders and revenue. A few hundred or even a couple of thousand old sleds will not make or break that. Not that most people who ride old sleds will do it exclusively, even the ones that do will not put the wear on the trail that the newer machined do with the big power and deep tracks. This is a fact. I do suspect 30 years old as a cutoff might be a more reasdonable sell than 25. Or maybe 1980 and older, to be revised at some point in the future where there is a reasonable need to update the model year.

  Keep up the fight! ridethewind

Well , I printed all the great letters Ive got, If you have an opinion Please get it in and it will be included.  All  19  of the letters have good points,.

Gary Broaderick   VP of NYSSA has looked into Fleet coverage for insurance, I too looked into a blanket coverage for the operator to avoid insurance on each sled.  By Gary even doing that I feel is a big step, this is the first positive step made by NYSSA leadership to approach the vintage rider !    To me this is big !    Well , I'm gonna giver hell Sat, hope I can get it for all 19 of us...........BK

I wonder if people are having a hard time registering on the bulletin board. It says I'm out of membership which is BS because my NYSSA card says good until Aug.

It let me register anyways...but.... Siren

NC, Its a bad time of yr,and maybe we only have 19 NY sledders on here, but I did contact others from shows.    What ever, when its done,if it gets done, then they will come out of the wood work.     This is not new,the word should have gotton out.   If we dont get numbers this is toast  !        BK
