NEW VSMS SPONSOR!

Friday, December 31st, 2004

I’m very happy to report that Carrier and Strandlund Refrigeration have come forth to sponsor a $500 CASH prize for the Vintage SnoPro Master series for the IFS class! More details are to come, but that means the leaf spring class will be for just over $1200 in prizes, and the IFS class now has $500 available. Both winners will get a trophy big enough to frighten small children.

First race: This coming Sunday in Alexandria, Minnesota. Should be great fun – don’t miss it! Directions are on the bottom of this page, and drivers MUST be registered before Sunday morning to qualify.

Bill Stull is one of the latetest registrants – shown in this photo with his new Rupp. Dig that really cool paint scheme – at least I think that is Bill. Actually it looks like the really skinny version of Elvis. So is Elvis really dead? Or did he just slim down so much that no one can recognize him??

COLBY – WE LOVE YOU TOO.

Is oval racing on the rebound? Could it one day become the NASCAR of the North? Will we see 50,000 people watching the roundy-round races and no one at the slow-cross races?

Well there is a stunning ray of hope in the newest issue of SnowWeek magazine.

Associate Editor Colby Johnson wrote an open “love letter” to her former loves – hillcross and the dreaded slow-cross. After watching the Champ sleds in Beausejour earlier this month, Colby caught the bug and fell head over heals in love with oval racing.

Just a sampling of her comments and observations:
“…awe struck at the sheer speed of the sleds… ovals won my love and loyalty forever… their bodies half way off thier sleds, their knees skimming the track’s ice…my heart skipped a beat…I was shaking a bit…I love this sport!!… welcomed with open arms into every race trailer (note to Colby: – a pretty girl in a race trailer probably made thier day!) ..I’ve found what I’m looking for…found my soul mate”

Yep. She’s in love. I couldn’t be happier. Keep up the good work Colby, and feel free to keep knocking on the door of race trailers. They can always use a breath of fresh air.

Almost 40 drivers are now registered to take their shot at the the title of Vintage SnoPro Master. I’m sure more will filter in by Sunday, so keep checking back.

Loren Anderson sent in some more photos from his collection of photos and sleds – his 73 Ski-Doo racers and his 85 Ski-Doo Twin Track that was originally piloted by none other then Brad Hulings.

SMELL THE RACE FUMES!

27 drivers so far have registered for the Vintage SnoPro Master Series. The first race this Sunday on Wolf Lake in Alexandria Minnesota. Between them they are bringing 40 extra sleds to the race – and it’s only Tuesday. I know a lot of drivers are still waiting to sign up, and before Sunday we should have a whole bunch of new ones. New Profiles have been posted. If you are one of the drivers and some of your info is missing, please email us.

My little racer is almost ready…

FINALLY?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004

I’ve been dreaming about running a 77 Polaris leaf spring SnoPro around a track since, well since 1977. It will finally happen this year. I’m so looking forward to it. Actually there is a long way to go to get this baby running, but the basics are there.

When I was restoring the original racer I have, I didn’t want the hood work done while sitting on the real chassis. So with the help of my good friend Vance Elfering, we put together a replica bulkhead. While we were at it, we cut the tunnel off. To think this used to be a 76 TX! The motor is a TXL bottom end with a 1978 250cc RXL top end.

Last thing to do: Pipes, then get to work on tuning. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

VINTAGE “RIDE WITH THE CHAMPS”

Tuesday, December 28th, 2004

Getting ready for the big “Ride With The Champs” event, Charles Plueddeman has suggested that he who brings the oldest sled to the ride wins a fabulous prize – a great idea. So, the oldest sled to make the ride gets: a vintagesleds.com CD-ROM, and a copy of the “Racing’s Early Years” book from Race & Rally/ Snowtech magazine, and a t-shirt from the Hall of Fame! I already lost – I’m brining the 79 Centurion below. Charles will be bringing (hopefully) the 634 Puma below. Register today – and we’ll see you there!

A SPECIAL EASTERN SHOW

Friday, December 24th, 2004

Did you know the New Hampshire Annual Meet and Show this year will feature some of the legends of the sport of snowmobiling? I mention it because last year, I had the rare opportunity to go to the Roseau Frostbite Days celebration – and it was amazing. All the Polaris and Arctic Cat drivers (except Dimmerman and Elsner) from the BIG TIME era of racing, the founders and many more.

At this years NH show, you may well have one of your ONLY chances to meet David Johnson (coolest man alive – founder of Polaris, inventor of the Polaris snowmobile, and a truly gifted manager), VIntage Superstar Bud Knapp, Jerry Bassett of “American Snowmobiler”, some people from that little factory in Valcourt, (something we never get here in Minnesota!), and the legendary Edgar Hetten, Founder of Polaris and Arctic Cat!

Add all that in with a People’s Choice award – and an award given by the above legends to THEIR favorite sled at the show.. and you have the makings for a once in a lifetime amazing event. I wouldn’t miss it for the world if I lived on that side of the planet!

For more information, call George Burdick at 603-648-2304 or email Stephen Burdick. The show is February 13th, 2005 in Allentown, New Hampshire.

MERRY CHRISTMAS…

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2004

…and a snowy new year to all of you. Some of you are lucky enough to be out riding already. The rest of us stare out the window at the bleak, barren ground and continue to wonder if maybe dirt bikes might be more rewarding.

Nah.

MORE DRIVER PROFILES

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2004

We are up to 25 registered racers for the series. I know a lot more registrations are coming… but if you know a racer that hasn’t signed up – tell him he could be missing a chance to become a legend!
