82 Cat prototype

Monday, April 16th, 2001

Talk about your rare sleds! Today I posted Jerry McGee’s 1982 Arctic Cat Twin-Tracker prototype in the rarebirds section. One of only two made by the then financially beleaguered Cat, this beauty is one of the rarest sleds you’ll ever see.

82 Cat Prototype

Tested but never put into production, this was Cat’s answer to the early 80’s Ski-Doo Twin tracker threat. At the time, Cat was experiencing financial difficulties that almost killed all nine lives. When the fire sale came, this machine and her sister were in the parking lot for sale. Restored by SnoPro Unlimited and it’s current owner, Jerry McGee, this is cetainly an endangered species!

Thee Snowmobile Hall of Fame

Monday, April 9th, 2001

Over the weekend Doc Jim and I visited the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain, Wisconsin.

Yes, I braved driving through many hours of the land of cheese and beer just to look at some really cool old sleds.

I got pictures. Man, did I get pictures. They’ll be developed tomorrow. The curator, Loren Anderson spent many hours with us, explaining the sleds, discussing the Museum, showing us videos and even his private stash of collector sleds and memorabilia. The whole trip and the museum were fantastic! Loren is great asset to the museum, snowmobiling, snowmobile racing, and the vintage sled craze. If you haven’t been to the museum, make it a point to get there soon! It’s well worth the trip!

RareBirds

The King Kat for sale on eBay has been sold. I was not able to get any more detail then that, but I’m working on it. It was the now famous “gentleman on the East coast” that is the new proud owner of two sweet beasts. I’ll update the story as I get more info.

New to the site: RAREBIRDS!. Rarebirds will be dedicated to showing before & after and then & now photos, facts and information on the rarest of rare sleds. The criteria to be posted as a Rarebird is as follows: The sled must be interesting in some shape or fashion. The sled must be restored or in excellent original condition – I don’t want to post pictures of junk. It must have been produced in quantities of less then 15 or so. I may leave some flexibility here, as I don’t want to exclude something cool just because they originally made 16 of them. Email me if you have a Rarebird or you would like to suggest some sleds.

Rarebirds: The 340cc 1983 Twin Tracker Ski-Doo racer originally driven by Brad Hulings. Then, check out Al Enno’s Twin Tracker toy!

I need to thank Tom Thompson for taking the time and pointing out some, well, goofs on the site. I’ve also had some helpful emails from visitors that have corrected me on some info I had wrong. Thanks, I appreciate all the help I can get.

I Meet the Ebay King Kat Owner

Wednesday, April 4th, 2001

Last week I reported a King Kat for sale on eBay= that made it to a high bid of $9,800. The reserve was not met, so the sale didn’t go through.

Last night I met someone via an ad I’d placed on the web for parts. He had a track for me from a 1976 Arctic Cat Z. He lives not to far from my office, so I agreed to drive out to his place after work and take a look. When I arrived at his house, he was attempting to start his motorcycle with no luck. We walked down to the barn to take a look at the track. The track was good.

We settled on a price, then started looking at some of his vintage cats. A 76 Z, an El Tigre and some others I didn’t recognize. He asked me if I was interested in buying a King Kat. “I’d love to, but I’ve never even seen one, let alone one for sale”. I said, not even imagining he actually had one.

“I keep the good stuff in my garage” he said with a grin. I knew I was in for a good surprise. I told him about Vintage sleds.com. He’d never seen the site. But he had put his King Kat on eBay a few days ago. That’s when I knew I had stumbled on to a good story. I couldn’t help think what a small world it is.

In his garage was not only the eBay King Kat, but another one in good condition, just two serial numbers away from the now famous eBay King Kat. He bought three King Kats a while back, but didn’t really want all of them. He was forced to buy them as a package to get the one he wanted. The package also included a 1973 Formula II that he is restoring.

I’m not a Cat guy, but the King sure looked good to me. Four green temperature gauges. Racing seat. A chassis that measures correctly. But with those four giant-ass cylinders sticking out of the hood, who cares if it’s totally original? These things look positively cool!

We chatted about the Kings for some time. It turns out he did, as Doc Jim correctly guessed, have the reserve price so high it was unlikely anyone could meet it. But he got emails. Man, did he get emails.

One lucky gentleman on the East coast had until last night to make up his mind if he wants to purchase both of them. If not, there are many more people lined up to pick one or both of them up. How much will they go for? I promised not to tell, but let’s just say if you bought both the sleds, you could have taken the same amount of money and bought a handful of brand new, top of the line Arctic Cats. And a covered trailer if, you found a good sale.

But I don’t know of any new Arctic Cats, let alone trailers, that have four cylinders sticking out of the hood, so why spend your money foolishly? This stories not over. I’ll keep you posted as I find out the rest.

Smashed Charger and the World’s Ugliest Sleds

Friday, March 30th, 2001

You have some work done by a buddy on your cherished vintage sled. Your not home when your friend drops it off, so he leaves it by the road, near the garbage cans. The garbage man comes by and does this. Can you say F&$%K!!!!!!!

The King Cat on Ebay only made it up to $9,800 and the reserve wasn’t met. Was this a joke? Was his reserve set so high that no one would buy it – just to see what he could get for it?

• Any Twin Track raider
• ‘72 moto jet cesna 340

Collections and Ebay King Kats

Friday, March 23rd, 2001

I’m starting to hear from other people with cool collections. Today in the mail I got a stack of photos from Mike Farris. Damned nice stuff, I can’t wait to get them up. I’ve also set up appointments with three others to photograph their collections. Great fun.

I got my new issue of the VSCA (Vintage Snowmobile Club of America) magazine last night. If you don’t already subscribe to that magazine, I highly recommend it. I read it from cover to cover last night, and then I read it all over again. Great ads in the back as well.

Speaking of ads, someone put a 1971 4-cylinder King Kat for sale on eBay. With 6 days to go on the auction, it’s up over $5,000 already. If you win this auction, the seller wants you to send money first, then he’ll deliver it. I don’t know. I don’t think I could send thousands of dollars to a stranger in the hopes that he’ll bring the sled to me. Scary.

Beware The Mullett!

Wednesday, March 21st, 2001

mullet* (mu’ lit) 1. any of a family of edible, spiny-rayed fishes found in fresh and salt waters and having a small mouth and feeble teeth, as the striped (or gray) mullet. 2. Any haircut which the sides and top of the hair are cut significantly shorter than the back.

I invite you all to visit Mullets Galore.com and explore the fascinating and frightening world of the Mullet Head. Because we like vintage snowmobiles, we will forever be in danger of being compared to, or mistaken for, a Mullet Head. Some might find the concept of a Mullet Head offensive, but most likely the offended has a Mullet cut and/or can’t read, so who cares? As a public service, I’m posting all this information to help all of us Vintage sled fans steer clear of having a Mulletude, the prevailing attitude of the the Mullet Head:

mulletude (mu’ li’ tewd) the attitude that comes with the adornment of the mullet, behaviors can include the following: beating one’s spouse, scowling or sneering at those who don’t have mullets, engaging in fights on a regular basis (preferably with those who are not part of the mullet brotherhood), stealing, pedophilia, listening to butt-rock, attending monster truck rallies, driving a Chevrolet Camaro (model years 1970-1993) or mini-truck, snorting crank, misogyny, getting angry at the drop of a hat, date rape, speaking in an inappropriately loud voice.

Enjoy. And remember, just because you’ve got a sled torn apart in your basement does not mean you are one of the Mullet Brotherhood!
