Vintagesleds.com

Vintagesleds.com is dedicated to vintage and antique snowmobiles and the people who love them.

Larry PrestonMy name is Larry Preston. I'm also known as "Boy Wonder"*. That's me in the photo zipping along on my clone 1977 250cc Polaris SnoPro, having a great time.

Normally I spend most of my waking hours as an admitted web geek. My regular job is to work with a very talented group of people who design, market and build websites for companies large and small. You can read more about how we are striving to build a better internet - on site at a time at Podomani.com.

Vintagesleds.com really started way back in 1999. I posted some old pictures of 1970's era racing sleds on another site I owned and was overwhelmed by the response. I was very inspired to go to my first vintage sled show in Waconia that winter, and I took a ride on my brothers newly restored 1972 Polaris 800cc Starfire.

Larry Preston - Wolf Lake 2009For a week after that ride, I couldn't stop smiling. The obsession began. And it wasn't the love of all vintage Polaris sleds I was infected with. I wanted to dig into the old Rupp, Alouette, Kawasaki, John Deere, Arctic Cat, Ski-Whiz, Brut, Chaparral, Johnson, Sno*Jet, Moto-ski, Scorpion and many other brands of sleds. Even the Ski-Doos**.

Back at my offices the following Monday, I did some internet searches for some of the "big time" SnoPro racers from back in the day - Jerry Bunke, Larry Coltom, Yvon Duhamel, Bob Eastman and so on. Almost nothing or nothing came up! This had to change - these guys were my heroes growing up, and more important to me than any other sports or entertainment figure. So this site became a running record of all my experiences with the hobby and my goal of getting more of snowmobiling's history online - not to brag, but I was "blogging" before the word "blog" became popular. Try as I might, I just can't stop talking about, working on, playing with, riding, writing about, arguing about, wrestling with or banging my head on these old, sometimes rusty pieces of machinery. Why? Who cares as long as it's fun.

In my spare time, you can find me in my severely under-tooled garage, bleeding all over my collection of Polaris racers, wishing I knew what the heck I'm doing working on them. Or you'll find me hovered over the vintagesleds.com command and control center working on this site - because it's really a blast.

There are also a small army of contributors to the site, both writers, collectors, photographers, video shooters, coders and others who chip in. Most of the really cool old photos were sent in by readers like you. Please remember all of our Rights are Reserved, as well as those of the material presented on the site. *I consider "Boy Wonder" a term of enderment. It was bestowed upon me by my freinds at the world famous Eagle River Wisconsin Derby track, home of one of vintage snowmobilings biggest annual events.

** Had to throw that in. I've been accused of having an anti Ski-Doo bias. Not true. I will own a 245 RV someday! But in the interest of full disclosure, I am a bit of Polaris nut. Okay, I admit it, I bleed blue. It's a family thing, what can I say? But that doesn't stop me from appreciating it when I see someone else has the same passion for their brand or any old sled that is as strong as my own.
